Highland Park residents will soon have a new "community market" to choose from for their grocery shopping.

Fresco Community Market, located at 5914 Monterey Road in nearby Hermon, will open its doors Thursday, January 6.

The new market is less than a minute outside of Highlad Park, and can actually be seen from Avenue 60 while driving toward the neighborhood of Hermon.

The store will offer "a combination of conventional foods and some natural and organic groceries," said Gary Orona, the store's manager.

The market will also sell meats, produce and baked goods and will feature a kitchen which will offer ready to eat meals prepared by a Le Cordon Bleu Academy trained chef, Orona said.

"It will be a really good thing for Hermon," said Mark Legassie, Arroyo Seco Neighborhood Council's treasurer and Hermon resident. "It is going to be so convenient for me. I'll just walk half a block for groceries now."

Since he moved to Hermon five years ago, Legassie has had to drive to South Pasadena to buy groceries.

The market will not open without a touch of controversy, though.

Legassie said the community wanted to see an American chain store open in the location – a store like Vons, Trader Joe's or Fresh and Easy.

"The community was a little upset to hear about the final deal," he said.

The issue stems from the location's business history.

Over the years, the location has hosted a series of failed mom and pop stores. As a result, neighbors wanted to see a more stable business – like a chain store, he said.

Legassie said Fresh and Easy showed interest November 2009, but the owner leased the space to Fresco Community Market, which is not related to the Fresco Market in El Sereno.

Property owner, Jon Murga, could not be reached for comment.

Despite the controversy, Legassie said he's impressed by what he's seen so far. Once Fresco Community Market opens next week, he said he is going to buy all of his groceries from the new store to help support the local business.
