The Great Los Angeles Ice Cream Party began humbly in 1997 as a way
for young people to get together in a unique social setting. Ten
years later, it has grown into one of the largest ice cream socials
in the city. In the fourth year, the event started raising funds for
causes - just a few dollars that teenagers could raise by donating a
dollar or two. As the years past, the event became larger and more
organized. By year 7, we were raising over a thousand dollars, and
it was still geared to a young person who could donate a few
Over the years, the Great Los Angeles Ice Cream Party hasn't raised
millions of dollars, but we've allowed hundreds of young people the
opportunity to gather to do something good for the community. We've
supported youth programs, historical programs, and educational
programs across Los Angeles, and the venues have varied from
backyards and school halls to historic sites and museums. The Great
Los Angeles Ice Cream Party isn't a production that costs thousands
of dollars to put on; it's an event that takes something everyone
loves - ice cream - and allows good works to come of such a
Why an Ice Cream Party?
So, why does the Great Los Angeles Ice Cream Party exist today in
its current form?
Young people from ages 13 to 30 are often encouraged to get
involved, but there is rarely an opportunity for them to have the
experience of donating their money to a cause. Often fundraising
events are too expensive for them to attend or fundraising
activities such as silent auctions price the young person out of
participating. The Great Los Angeles Ice Cream Party provides an
opportunity for young people (and older people, too!) to donate
funds and participate at a moderate level. For a donation of 10 or
20 dollars, a person can fully partake in the event, as no donation
is required to have some ice cream and take part in the activities.
This is an event that is geared to ALL AGES from families to young
adults to senior citizens.
And besides, who doesn't love ice cream?
