      Board Meeting Highlights

      NEW OFFICERS, SORT OF

ASNC officers are limited to two consecutive one-year terms. President Martha Benedict had exceeded that by half a year due to irregular election cycles and the resignation of the prior President. Thus, it was high time the Board chose a new leader: Nina Zippay the At Large Environment representative, who had been serving as Vice President. That led to the need to elect another VP: Valerie Harragin, a Mt. Washington Geographic Representative who had been serving as Secretary. So who was chosen to be Secretary? Martha Benedict, thus completing an officer round of musical chairs.

Andrew Ptashnik was reelected Treasurer and Teresa Bonsell was reelected Registrar. Ivan Spiegel was reappointed as Parliamentarian.

      NEW MONTEREY HILLS REPRESENTATIVE

Andrew Ptashnik, Valerie Harragin, Nina Zippay, Martha Benedict, Teresa Bonsell and Boris K'Zorin.

After the officers were squared away, the Board welcomed a new Monterey Hills Representative, Boris K'Zorin. Mr. K'Zorin has recently become an American citizen. He is originally from Belarus.

COMMUNITY IMPACT STATEMENT ON BEEKEEPING PASSED

ASNC will join several Neighborhood Councils in advocating for the legalization of beekeeping within the City supporting the motion made by former Councilmember Bill Rosendahl. The statement reads: "ASNC supports legalization of urban beekeeping within R1 districts in Los Angeles and encourages the City to initiate an ordinance to allow residents to raise their own honeybees, a practice which boosts struggling honeybee populations and ensures local food security. ASNC also strongly urges the City Council to improve Bee Rescue policy which, when feasible, supports live bee removal on city and public property within Los Angeles."

The Board also voted to support Alternative 20, the most far-reaching option presented by the Army Corps of Engineers for the Los Angeles River. Mayor Garcetti and Counclmember Cedillo are currently in Washington DC seeking support for Alternative 20 as well.

Weigh in on Superior Market Exterior's Preservation November 5

Please attend the Planning and Land Use committee Meeting Tuesday at City Hall to fill out a speaker card on item 13-0611 and state your views on the preservation of Superior Market's unique exterior features. You can arrange parking by calling the Council office at 213-473-7001. The meeting starts at 2:30 p.m. in Room 350.

Sign the petition to protect the authentic Googie-style exterior of Superior Market on Figueroa and Avenue 45, organized by Highland Park Heritage Trust. The Arroyo Seco Neighborhood Council made a Community Impact Statement in support of the Historic Cultural Monument designation of the building, which has already been approved by the City's Cultural Heritage Commission. Council District 1 Councilmember Gil Cedillo will cast a deciding vote on the matter. This petition will let him know how you think he should vote. Please call (213) 473-7001 or write Sylvia.Robledo@... or Gerald.Gubatan@....

Mayor Garcetti's Pothole Blitz Candidates Due November 10

According to Street Services' Aida Valencia, on November 21st, 2013, a small asphalt repair truck "is scheduled to be in the Arroyo Seco Neighborhood Council District to perform repairs to the roadway, curbs, and sidewalks, weather permitting." Candidates for repair are to be submitted to landuse@... by November 10 to be considered for this so-called blitz of street improvements. The map above provided by Street Services is color coded to show road conditions. Green is good, yellow not so good, and red means poor to failing. We will choose the worthiest, worst eight submissions to be evaluated for repair on the appointed date. Don't put this off! We want your input.
