      Thru 12-18-04.

I'm listing players whose production is significantly different from
last season's, on a per-minute basis. "Imp" column shows
estimated "extra" pts, reb, etc over last season's rates, in this
      year's minutes.

Adjusted and pro-rated per-36-minute rates are listed; also last-
      year's team.

The team totals do not add up to the team improvement. For example,
Baron Davis started out hot (again) and went down after 5 games. So
he nets an improvement for the season's minutes he played; but his
team has gotten nothing from him since.

Hornets, Pacers, and Bobcats feature many players who were Nobodies
last year, but contributors this year. They aren't having good
seasons, but have some surprising help.

        Here's his categorical breakdown:

season min Eff% Sco. Reb Ast Stl (TO.) Blk
        2003-04 40 .487 20.2 5.5 6.0 1.6 (3.3) 0.7
        2004-05 41 .561 25.3 7.3 6.7 2.5 (3.1) 0.9

That's what you call across-the-board improvement; actually
        significant in every single category.

The modest improvement in turnover rate should also consider that
he's doing much more, yet fewer TO -- quite remarkable.

Lebron leads all NBA players in net improvement this year. Teammate
Drew Gooden is also in the top 5:

season min Eff% Sco. Reb. Ast Stl (TO.) Blk
        2003-04 27 .483 14.0 _8.3 1.5 1.0 (2.0) 1.2
        2004-05 31 .567 17.3 12.6 2.2 1.0 (1.8) 1.2

Somehow, Gooden stepped into and Exactly filled Boozer's role:

        2003-04 35 .565 17.8 12.7 2.2 1.0 (1.9) 0.8

This is really uncanny, I think.

I doubt it. No one has responded favorably to the new roster. I
thought Yao's trajectory was such that he might overtake Shaq as Top
        NBA Center.

If you're not being facetious and honestly don't know, Griffin bounced around several rehab places for problems with depression and drugs.  While it's hard to imagine that he worked on his game that much, simply getting his head cleared might have allowed him to improve his production on the court.

I knew only that he was some sort of "head case". But my real
question was, how can a guy out of the league for a year have this
              much game?

He's the only other good rebounder on the team, after Garnett; he's
the best shot-blocker; one of the 4 best scorers; and he leads the
              team in 3's.

Why he's only getting 23 MPG I can only guess. (I honestly don't
              know.)

Interestingly, I've noticed a dip in Garnett's rates. He's now
further behind Duncan than either has been for a couple of years (as
TD has surged). Maybe he's "slacking", with the relative luxury of
Griffin off the bench. Is he the all-round PF they've been missing
              forever?

And how about that Hoiberg: 26-46 from the arc is effectively 85%
shooting (he's at .727 overall). Shoot some more, Fred!

Sprewell appears to be washed up. One dimensional and doesn't do
              that very well.
