i revised my draft perfromance rating formula to

      performance = ((PTS - VOP*FGmsd - .5*VOP*FTmsd + 1.25*VOP*st + .7*as
      + .6*VOP*bl + VOP*reb - 1.25*VOP*to - 1*pf) / minutesPlayed) * (36
minutes / actual avg minutes played)* (1/pace played) * (def. wt. )

defensive weight is = (1-82 games.com team def. rating while player
has on court+100) / 100. this is admittedly an imprecise figure
because it doesnt fully isolate the defense played by the individual.
but it is a starting point for crediting some of the undereported
defensive value. it could be improved upon with more defensive play
by play stats like %stops and opp FG%. also i recognize that by
multiplying def rating by the rest of performance calculation it
rewards or penalizes proportionaally based on the size of that
score. but to some degree a good defensive player who is strong
overall with a rating that emphasizes offensive categories is even
more valuable (2 way players being rare). bad defensively players
arent reduced equally, but at least they are reduced.

there is still room for further improvement. but do the new top 25
rankings look better? the data is ordered down by the old
performance ranking and you can see how much difference the new
formula made (7 adjustments: pace, minutes played, and defense move
players around as does the higher weights on steals, assists, blocks
      and fouls.)

ps. the original list had more than 50 on purpose to account for
webber's return (not on john hollinger list) and allow in case
another was missing and just to see who has on the bubble.

i cut this re-run down to a new top25 for manageability.
