      Sebastian Paul Brock (born 1938, London) is acknowledged as the foremost and most influential academic in the field of Syriac language today. He is a former Reader in Syriac Studies at the University of Oxford's Oriental Institute and currently a Professorial Fellow at Wolfson College. Sebastian Brock completed MA degrees at the University of Cambridge and Oxford, and a DPhil at Oxford. He is the recipient of a number of honorary doctorates and has been awarded the Medal of Saint Ephrem the Syrian by our Patriarch His Holiness Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas. His latest publications include The Wisdom of St. Isaac of Nineveh, The Bible in the Syriac Tradition, Ephrem the Syrian: Select Poems, and An Introduction to Syriac Studies.

        Sebastian Brock, a renowned Syriac scholar, will deliver a lecture entitled “The Syriac Culture and Heritage” at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 14 at the Assyrian Orthodox Church of the Virgin Mary, 644 Paramus Road, Paramus, NJ. The lecture will be followed by a book signing. The event is sponsored by the Assyrian Orthodox Church of the Virgin Mary, Gorgias Press, and H.E. Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim. Dr. Brock is acknowledged as the foremost and most influential academic in the field of Syriac language today. He is considered to be responsible for the recent resurgence of interest in the field of Syriac studies. He has reintroduced the vast and varied literature of Syriac-speaking Christianity to many readers, and has published extensively in the field of Syriac.

        A dialect of Aramaic, Syriac was used to help construct some of the dialogue heard in Mel Gibson’s recent movie, The Passion of the Christ.

        Brock has brought new attention to St. Ephrem the Syrian, St. Isaac of Nineveh and other important writers. His work has demonstrated the many points of contact between the Church and the Synagogue. He was awarded the Medal of St Ephrem by Syrian Orthodox Patriarch Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas..

        Until his retirement in 2003, Brock held the position of Reader in Syriac Studies at the University of Oxford. Sebastian Brock was born in 1938 and studied Classics (Greek and Latin) and Oriental Studies (Hebrew and Aramaic) at Cambridge University before doing a DPhil at Oxford University on the text of the Septuagint. He taught at the Universities of Birmingham and Cambridge before taking up his post at Oxford.
