Egypt is not the only source of elephants for the ANE. There were
indigenous Syrian elephants (now long extinct). And Mesopotamian
connections with the Harappan culture of the Indus is illustrated by a
cylinder seal with an (Indian) elephant, rhinoceros and a ghavial
(crocodile) excavated at Tell Asmar in the Diyala region. (See ART OF
THE FIRST CITIES, p.239 & 246) There must have been more than one ANE
word for the creature.
