A stratigraphic and pottery question about Kabri Tomb 498 for anyone who
      may know:

According to the preliminary report (Kempinski 1989), Tomb 498 at Tel
Kabri was excavated in two "layers"; and quite different samples of
pottery from each were published. It also gave fairly detailed, but
non-petrographic, descriptions of the wares. The final report (Kempinski
2002:52) also alludes to this division. However, the full publication of
the pottery (Kempinski, Gershuny, and Scheftelowitz 2002) seems to treat
all of Tomb 498 as a single locus. The pottery is not assigned to
individual layers, and no diagram is given showing the position of
individual pots in the tomb. Ware descriptions are extremely brief, and
do not even include descriptions of surface treatment.

Is there any way to know (without relying upon the typology) which pots
belong to the earlier "layer", and which to the "latter"? Is any
information available as to surface treatment, other than what can be
deduced from the drawings? Is it at least safe to assume that gray
hatching on the drawings represents red-burnished or brown-burnished
surface treatment, or might other surface treatments have been indicated
      the same way?
