Group Description

This group aims to facilitate minor planet and comet research in Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia. It evolved out of the Australian Minor Planet Workshop, held in Australia in July, 2003. In this event, more than 62 professional and amateur astronomers met for the exchange of knowledge and skills, and the promotion of minor planet research as a joint effort between professional and amateur astronomers. This group aims to sustain the momentum imparted by that meeting. The term "Australasian" has been used to indicate that the scope of the list is broader than the original Workshop.

The groups observing goals with respect to asteroids include:

• Recovery and discovery

• Astrometric follow-up

• Photometry – light-curves, absolute magnitudes, shape and poles,
mutual events, tumbling.

• Occultations

• Colorimetry

• Southern hemisphere observations

(The photo of the asteroid, Gaspra, above is from N.A.S.A.)

Membership is open to both professional and amateur astronomers with a serious intention to be involved in minor planet work.
