Did you know we are currently in one of the worst droughts in US history, impacting 26 states including California (and even Hawai'i!)? If you need any more reminders that we face man-made climate change in our lifetimes, there you go! If you want to do something about it, our chapter can use an awesome volunteer like you. Learn how you can help in this latest Loma Prietan article (incidentally, also about me!).
Speaking of volunteers, congratulations to members of our Conservation Committee for successfully calling on the Mountain View city council to protect burrowing owl habitat in the North Bayshore area!

Volunteer for a Sierra Club Loma Prieta Chapter Endorsement Team in your city!
The Sierra Club interviews and endorses city council and other local elected officials. We try to interview the candidates in every one of the 23 races listed so we can help the most environmentally supportive candidates get elected. The 1st step is to interview candidates interested in our endorsement.
We need many volunteers to have teams for all these races! If you are willing to commit to 1 two hour training session in the next few weeks and 1 evening between August 20-30 to interview candidates in your city, please let us know by contacting John Cordes political@... and Ann Schneider, schneiderann@... to volunteer or if you have questions.
Santa Clara Water Board needs you!
The Santa Clara Water Board is up for re-election and we need individuals on the Water District Board who want to see better balance in the budget for our water supply, flood control, and environmental needs. We need those individuals to file their candidacy by early August 2012. Candidates don't need to be water experts, but they need to be able to make common sense decisions based on a logical consideration of the complex facts. They need to be willing to listen and then to be leaders in creating new approaches. Please consider serving your community in this much needed way.
If you know anyone or if you yourself would be interested in serving on the Water District Board, please contact Richard McMurtry 408-402-3641, RMcMurtry@..., with Environmentalists for Living Streams.
