      June 2012

      Dear Friend,

I don't know about you, but I like to get out in the summer! It may be getting hotter, but hikes, camping trips, picnics, and food festivals are more than enough reason to get me out and active.

The chapter wants to help you enjoy the summer sun -- from taking public transit to installing a solar system in your home, Sierra Club has got you covered on ways you can make use of the delights of our local star this warm season.

Come out and get your Vitamin D!

      In solidarity,

      Adrien Salazar
      Conservation Coordinator

On June 21, 2012 take public transportation!

While our economy is hurting and gas prices continue to skyrocket, public transit offers everyone transportation alternatives that help the planet and improve quality of life. Taking public transit reduces traffic congestion, helps you save money, and provides an amazing way to be energy independent. National Dump the Pump Day is a day to support public transit by stepping on board your local bus or train to get to work or school.

Join Sierra Club and Dump the Pump tomorrow! Visit the National Dump the Dump Day website for more information.

Get Dirty Power Out of Santa Clara

San Juan powerDid you know that hidden in your power bill is a dirty secret? Energy powering homes in the City of Santa Clara comes partly from a dirty outdated coal plant -- the San Juan Generating Station in New Mexico.

Silicon Valley Power has made clean energy a priority by investing in wind and solar power but we believe it's time to get off dirty coal once and for all. We need them to shut the door on the San Juan Generating Station and move toward a 21st century clean energy economy. Send a letter to Silicon Valley Power now and tell them to divest from dirty coal electricity imported from the San Juan Generating Station.

Support Bus Rapid Transit in Mountain View!

Residents of Mountain View, your support is needed! VTA has proposed a dedicated lane for the 522 line on El Camino Real. In Mountain View, this would include two bus stations on the medians, one located at Castro Street and one at San Antonio shopping center.

The Sierra Club Loma Prieta Chapter supports BRT with dedicated lanes because it will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve mobility along the El Camino corridor for current and future residents.

Mountain View City Council will vote on dedicated lanes for BRT at their July 10 meeting, at Mountain View City Hall 500 Castro Street. Meeting begins at 6:30 p.m.

Please take action by sending a letter now to your elected officials to let them know you support Bus Rapid Transit!
