      March 2012

      Dear Friend,

We've had several exciting successes so far this year as a result of the dedicated work of Cool Cities Teams and our local community partners.

For example, thanks to the efforts of the San Mateo Cool Cities Team, on February 15, the San Mateo City Council voted to support three agenda items put forth by the team including a plastic bag ban, a polystyrene ban, and a gas powered leaf blower ban. Additionally, in Menlo Park on January 25, Facebook agreed to make major new investments in bike routes to new campus with support from Menlo Park Green Ribbon Citizens' Committee and Palo Alto Cool Cities Team. Check out our growing list of Cool Cities Activities and Successes online.

If you have a passion for the environment and the initiative to help move one of the Cool Cities Team Goals forward in your city, please let me know! Teams all over San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties are doing such impressive work and we always welcome new volunteers. Here are a couple examples of efforts teams are working on now:

      • Residents in Mountain View, Los Altos, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, and San Jose are organizing in support of a dedicated lane for Bus Rapid Transit along El Camino (The Alameda in San Jose).
      • The Redwood City Cool Cities Team hosted a successful "Going Green without Going Broke" community event on March 5 with nearly 40 participants. The organizers will host more of these in other cities and would love volunteers to help organize.

Also, there are loads of upcoming events about sustainability in our region, check some of these out below. I'm particularly excited about our next Healthy Communities Forum on April 4 and our Chapter's Awards Celebration on May 6.

      In service,

      Megan Fluke

P.S.: None of this would be possible without our dedicated team of interns, check out the recent article in our newsletter about their vital work!
