Lines of CACKLING GEESE flew over Unalaska today, their loud calls welcoming spring at last. A flock of thirty circled Unalaska Bay, and later two separate flocks of seventy or eighty headed up into Captain's Bay and straight through the mountain pass towards Makushin. They seemed determined to keep heading west. On the mudflats at the head of Captain's Bay were three EURASIAN WIGEONS and two GADWALLS. The willows were alive with SNOW BUNTINGS, at least four hundred in loose wavering flocks, and very vocal. COMMON REDPOLLS too were in the willows, and I heard a few ROCK PTARMIGAN higher up in the snow patches. The marshes, just emerging from the melted snows, were scrolled with lemming burrows and pricked with new spears of grass.
