Eagle River Nature Center Owls
- Last night I had a group of about 20 join me for an owl hike at Eagle River Nature Center - in absolutely perfect conditions. Cloudless sky with beautiful starry skies and temps in the high 20s.
We walked out to Four Corners and then up to the the 1st bridge on the upper Albert Loop. We heard 2 Great Horned Owls and 2 boreal owls. The Great Horned owls were calling from somewhere on near the lower Albert Loop and another in a similar location in a similar location down-valley but a little bit up on the hillside. The 2 boreal owls were also located one near the Upper Albert Loop, about 1/2 way between 4 Corners and the river and another near 4 corners in terms of location down-valley, but a bit on the hillside.
I took a group out on an owling hike Saturday night (3/8) at the Eagle River Nature Center.
We heard 2 (possibly 3) Great Horned Owls and 2 (possibly 3) Boreal Owls.
Great Horned Owl locations:
1 - very close to nature center, heard just above the center near residences. This one got vocal ~9:30 pm (now with DST 10:30; 3 hours after sunset)
2 - lower Albert Loop area (distant)
3 - possible in upper Albert Loop area (but this could have been people hooting)
1 - heard well from Bear Meadows on Crow Pass/Iditarod Trail. Bird calling from near intersection of Mtn Meadows and Dew Mound Trail.
#2 or #3 were more distant, located in vicitnity of Upper Albert Loop or Dew Mound trail (I have horrible directional hearing unless the bird is close and wind was playing some tricks on us).
