Today in Beluga Slough as we were watching the lovely swans, all the gulls and ducks suddenly spooked as a bald eagle came flying over. It zeroed in on one gull which did a successful job eluding the eagle. Soon another eagle flew into the scene so it was two against one, with the gull continuing to perform skillful maneuvers to keep out of the occasionally outstretched eagle talons. Then, a THIRD eagle joined in and at that point I will admit I covered my eyes a few times. Just couldn't watch what I felt was inevitable. But somehow the little gull managed to keep up its evasive flying for ten minutes or so until the eagles, one by one, gave up and flew away. When the last one left, a cheer went up!
(Yes, I know eagles have to eat also.)
