Homer/Kachemak Bay Bird Hot Line (235-PEEP) 02-17-09
- On the 13th RUSTY BLACKBIRDS (22) were still at Seaside Farm.
In Town, Varied Thrush (one singing) and a Northern Hawk Owl were
seen that day. On the Calhoon Trail, White-crowned and American Tree
sparrows, Am. Robin, Varied Thrush, Northern Shrike and Dark-eyed
Juncos were seen. Near Mt. View and Kachemak Way, 50 Bohemian
Waxwings, a Sharp-shinned Hawk and White-crowned Sparrow were seen.
On the 13th there was a single report of a DIPPER at Coal Point out
on the Spit! This would be a very unusual sighting there but it was
determined that occasionally Dippers are seen near marine waters.
The group of about two dozen Snow Buntings has been reported several
times, most recently south of Mariner Park.
Several reports continue to come of Hawk Owls in town, out West Hill
Rd and off Skyline.
On the 9th 2 Red Crossbills and many White-winged Crossbills were
seen on the Diamond Creek Trail, also seen there was a Three-toed
On the 7th the Kachemak Bay Birders went out in the Bay on Mako's
Water Taxi west of the Spit and saw 126 Steller's Eiders, Common
Loons, Horned Grebe, Pelagic Cormorants, scoters (3 species),
Harlequin Ducks, Long-tailed Ducks, Common Goldeneyes, Pigeon
Guillemots and Rock Sandpipers.
On the 9th Carmen Field led a Family Birding trip at Seaside Farms.
They saw a sharp-shinned Hawk, Song and Golden-crowned Sparrows, Pine
Siskins, Red Polls, Juncos, and Downy and Harry Woodpeckers.
