Steller's Eider female photo posted
- Posted under Griswold is a collage of the single female Steller's
Eider, taken Saturday around noon at Spring Creek Beach adjacent to
the Seward Marine Industrial Center at mile 5 Nash Road. The two white
wing bars on either side of inconspicuous purple/blue speculum are
She was diving and feeding without her usual company of Harlequins.
I have noticed that she is very wary, and a loose dog will drive her
away quickly. Even standing to see her make her swim away. It is best
to try to observe her through the leafless alders from the vehicle
parked in the upland area turnaround just north of the boat basin.
When she dives, it is easier to sneak out and freeze crouched down
when she pops up to look around.
