      (Apologies for cross-posting)

The Great Backyard Bird Count starts today and runs through Feb  17. You can submit and peruse photos for the photo contest and see a map of where in the globe people have submitted reports on the GBBC website (http://gbbc.birdcount.org/). It's a great way to get new birders involved!

If you haven't done the GBBC before, it's very simple--just go birding for a minimum of 15 minutes over the next 4 days, then enter your sightings on the Great Backyard Bird Count website or eBird. You can enter as many lists as you want, from your feeder or your favorite birding spot or trail.

The eBird gurus have thrown down the gauntlet--is it possible to see half of the world's bird species in 1 weekend? You can help get Alaska's species on the map.

      FREE APPs!
There's a Great Backyard Bird Count version of the BirdLog app (which allows you to enter sightings into eBird from your mobile device) available for FREE until Feb 28. For you travelers, BirdLog South America and BirdLog Europe are also FREE through the end of the month. If you haven't used BirdLog before, it does allow you to make entries without cell reception, it just uploads the data when you get back in range--so you can still use it rafting down the Amazon.

      Happy Birding!
