The RUSTIC BUNTING was seen again today (26th) in the same area on Hohe St in the neighborhood near the Hospital. It was first seen and photographed on Dec. 14th and has been seen nearly every day since, maybe every day. It was first traveling with some robins, but soon was seen traveling with a group of juncos. Check AKBirding for the latest postings for this bird, and thanks to Aaron Lang and all the others for the up-to-date postings. This bird is very rare and only seen here once before (1985) and nowhere else on the Kenai Peninsula.

Out on the Spit there were about 50 ROCK SANDPIPERS seen on the 26th. And a female NORTHERN HARRIER was seen hunting on the west side of the spit in an area with some ROCK SANDPIPERS and but in turn being mobbed by crows. On the 9th a SHORT-EARED OWL was seen and a GREAT HORNED OWL was heard in the mid-spit area near the Fishing Hole. SNOW BUNTINGS (60) were seen on the 9th in the Green Timbers area.

In the Fritz Creek and Miller's Landing areas the following are being seen at feeders: chickadees, DARK-EYED JUNCOS, PINE GROSBEAKS, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS (2 at Fritz Creek), and hanging around near feeders, NORTHERN SHRIKE.

A NORTHERN FLICKER was observed coming to a feeder on Kachemak Drive near Lampert Lake. It was seen on the 9th and for a few days but was not present for the Christmas Bird Count unfortunately, nor reported since.

The Homer Christmas Bird Count was held on December 14th. It was a cold, snowy day but there were 53 species seen, including the RUSTIC BUNTING. There were 4 additional Count Week Species: GREAT HORNED OWL, NORTHERN HARRIER, PIGEON GUILLEMOT, MARBLED MURRELET. (Read more on the Kachemak Bay Birders' website.)
