In the world of the Internet designers have often failed to design the experience their client have when working with them. The process of creating interactive products is still quite new, many parties are involved, and the dependencies are great. Web design touches more aspects of an organisation than any other area of design, and a design culture has to become part of an organisation for a project to succeed. This month we have three presentations, addressing these issues and looking at the client-designer relationship from a number of angles.

Presentation: Working with clients
-- Ann Whittle, Business Development Manager at Talis Information, a leading supplier of library information systems, and Rachel Jones of Instrata discuss a recent project to update to improve the "look and feel" of Talis's online catalogue system and to support more advanced search features. Around 12 million people use the system in UK public and university libraries. The challenge was to design an interface that was easy to learn for any first time Web user whilst offering the functionality needed by an academic researcher.
- Rachel Jones has over 15 years experience applying a variety of
observational, analytic and user-centred design techniques to the
creation of innovative solutions in client project work. Rachel
founded Instrata, a user research and design consultancy, in May 2001.
She has worked at Sapient as an experience modeller, and spent four
years as a research scientist at Xerox EuroPARC. She has a PhD in
Computer Science from Loughborough University.
Discussion: Through the looking glass
-- An insiders look from either side of an agency-client relationship that died. Ian Worley will present the agency's perspective and Andrew Lam-Po-Tang the client's. Rather than pontificating on 'the answers' they will be inviting us to "think out loud with them".
- Ian Worley trained and worked as an architect until 1994 when he
began working in the new media industry as a designer, information
architect and consultant. He was, until recently, a Creative Lead
in the London office of Viant, which he helped establish in April 1999.
His is currently the Chief eXperience Officer for the Inspired
Technology Group, where he is responsible for shaping the development
of mobile applications from a customer experience perspective.
- Andrew Lam-Po-Tang has been a strategy consulting with The Boston
Consulting Group (http://www.bcg.com/) since 1993, having studied at
Insead business school, and is currently focused on e-business and IT.
Previously he had owned a small design studio in Sydney, and in 1996
he took the year off to run the Australian Graphic Design
Presentation: Web Design for Business
-- Gill Wildman, Design Manager at the Design Council, will present the 'Web Design for Business' project, one of a number of tools the Design Council has developed for business. The project is intended to help SMEs understand Web design, develop a project specification, find, evaluate and brief suppliers, and manage the design development and integration process. Elements of the project include a visual process flow, a printed 'manual', and a recently launched Web site:

Our next event, in the second week of December, will be a presentation from Colin Burns, director of the London office of Ideo (http://www.ideo.com/), which describes itself as a "recognised world leader in the user-centred design of products, services, and environments".
