Group Description

Alabama Coalition on Outdoor Lighting is a non-profit organization whose goal is to reduce/control light pollution across the state of Alabama to improve the condition of our outdoor environment during night hours. ACOOL seeks to achieve state-wide legislation to regulate outdoor lighting in a manner that will control light pollution.

Citizens are a major key to achieving affective lighting policy and compliance. ACOOL is designed to assist citizens in achieving outdoor lighting control at the local level, as well as the state level. ACOOL is a citizen activism group that operates by educating the public about light polluiton: what it is, how it can be controlled, and why it should be controlled. This might be as "local" as a next door neighbor.

Everyone is a stakeholder in the issue of light pollution. There are no good points to light pollution, only drawbacks. These include wasted money through wasted energy, decrease in visibility while driving due to glare, light trespass (neighboring lights shine into your windows), compromise of nocturnal plants and animals, increased risk of breast and colon cancer, sleep disrutption, and rapid reduction in visible starscape- just to name a few.

Good lighting is win-win.
