      Edit swiftly and thoroughly for accuracy, clarity and fairness.
      · Craft enticing headlines for print and SEO headlines for the Web.
      · Design and paginate with InDesign-based publishing system.
      · Post stories, photos and links online via content management system.
      We seek a rising star with a solid understanding of online and print publishing who sees and values the copy editor's role in an increasingly digital news environment and who will help champion and redefine that role to incorporate new technologies.             The Orange County Register is looking for a copy editor with commitment to excellent, lively, high-quality journalism.

            Responsibilities include shaping stories for publication to Register standards by:

            --Reading the story and correcting any mistakes including spelling, grammar, style and common facts

            --Writing headlines, captions and refers 

            --Checking graphics

            --Trimming the story to fit

            --Raising any issues of inaccuracy, omission, bias or libel

            --Notifying the slot about such issues and contacting  the reporter or editor for clarification

            --Proofreading section fronts

             

            Must be knowledgeable in Associated Press style. Experience with CCI, layout or wire editing is a plus. Night and weekend work is required.

            This is a collaborative department so the copy editor needs to be able to work well with other members of the copy desk as well as designers, photo editors, line editors and other members of the newsroom to meet shared goals. The job requires comfort with editing stories in various print and digital platforms and the ability to work on various sections of the newspaper – from Cars one day to News the next. Topics may include news, business, features and online breaking news. You’ll be an expert on the difference between Corona del Mar and Avenida Del Mar, FasTrak and Fastpass, and the Orange Crush and the Orange Circle.

            Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree and at least two years of copy editing experience. Knowledge of Orange County is a plus.

                Our newsroom allows copy editors to specialize in editing and headline-writing. Our aim is to produce a quality newspaper for our readers, who come first at our company.

                This position, located in Little Rock, is on our night copy desk. The ideal candidate has a bachelor’s degree in journalism and at least three years of daily newspaper experience, but we will review the resume of any skilled wordsmith who can show how he or she spared a newspaper from libel, mistakes and poor grammar, all the while crafting headlines that caught the reader's eye.

                Applicants must know headline writing, grammar, punctuation, Associated Press style and libel law. A big plus is experience working on the wire desk, from selecting to strongly editing wire stories.

                      QUALIFICATIONS
