- The Lawrence Journal-World is hiring a copy chief to lead the daily operations of its cutting edge, dynamic newsroom. This position reports to the managing editor. This is a coveted opportunity to work with a first-rate journalism team engaging the local community with a variety of digital and print tools.
We are seeking an experienced copy editor with a history of success in digital and print media to manage the news copy desk. Additional responsibilities include:
supervising and assigning work to the newsroom copy editors and copy interns;
editing stories for accuracy, clarity, completeness, objectivity, grammar and spelling, organization, readability and style;
enhancing the team's knowledge on editorial best practices;
continuously improving the efficiency of the copyediting and proofreading processes;
conducting regular training for copy editors and seeking external, contemporary best practices;
writing clear, compelling and informative headlines;
recognizing the importance of web headline SEO;
contributing constructively and significantly to newsroom planning and strategy discussions;
with input from the digital editor and others, directing the maintenance of our websites, including but not limited to LJWorld.com, so that content remains current, accurate and fresh;
communicating with reporters, editors and photographers to ensure consistency in style, tone, and quality;
performing detail-oriented, quality work within deadlines;
interacting professionally with other employees and customers;
working effectively as a team contributor on all assignments; and
acquiring and maintaining contacts in the copy editing community to ensure a steady stream of applicants for open positions.
Ideal candidates must have five or more year's relevant experience in a newsroom, working with print or digital copy editing, a Bachelor's degree or equivalent years of work experience; at least two years of supervisory experience; deep familiarity and facility with Macs and InCopy; knowledge of AP style; high attention to detail, comfortable with hands-on management of tasks and proven ability to manage multiple, competing priorities; excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with senior management, direct reports and internal customers; sound news judgment; a keen eye for errors of style and substance; strong design skills, including experience with alternative story forms; familiarity with social media tools, e.g., Facebook and Twitter; audio and video editing experience a plus, but not required; be team-oriented and able to work evenings and weekends.
