Visiting Assistant Professor/Knight Visiting News Editor

Do you want to help create the right, bright future for journalism? If so, consider spending a year where that's happening every day.

You: A top-notch news professional who has a strong foundation in the principles of journalism but isn't stuck in past practices. You are the editor who is ready to remake a digital production hub and interactive copy desk that is already on the front edge. You not only speak for the quality and integrity of stories, but for a new relationship with readers. You are savvy about social media as an exciting way to report, publish and engage with the community. You understand analytics and can help others interpret them to create better journalism.

Us: The nation's top journalism school with a professional daily newsroom at its center. We build on more than 100 years of tradition and excellence to move boldly into the future. Our student staffs are led by experienced professionals and together deliver award-winning community news. We pride ourselves on innovation, experimentation and taking risks that many newsrooms can't or won't. Words like "convergence" and "Web-first?" So yesterday. Our Interactive Copy Desk is the hub of our digital newsroom. Our reporters grab whatever tool is best to tell the story. And as soon as we figure those things out, we try something new.

Sound like a good fit? Then apply to be the 2013-2014 Knight Visiting Editor at the Missouri School of Journalism. Our team of editors each year welcomes a visiting professional to learn, work and teach side-by-side with some of the most forward-thinking people in the industry.

We want a person who believes in serving the public, can ask hard but respectful questions about how readers and users interact with our news products, and can help us find creative ways to meet reader needs. We want someone who brings a sense of joy and possibility about the future of news. Someone who is excited about redefining copy editing in the digital age. Someone able to learn and lead in our newsrooms and classrooms, and eager to share those lessons with the news industry at large.

Did we say learn? You can take courses, at the j-school or elsewhere on campus at a very low cost while here. Or let's say you hunger for new skills in CSS. There's a free class for that and many other technical programs. Or you want the latest from thought leaders on digital publishing. There's a conference for that, and it's free too. Be sure to bring a brown bag,; in one week, lunches here might feature a Pulitzer Prize winning writer, a nationally known editor, a journalism scholar and an international war reporter.

As Visiting Editor, you will be based at the Columbia Missourian, a service-oriented news organization that collaborates with professional radio, broadcast and magazine newsrooms at the School of Journalism. You will teach, coach, mentor (and learn) from some of the best students in the country. You will collaborate with the Reynolds Journalism Institute, the Futures Lab and the Knight Chair in Editing on several experiments in journalism for this new age.

When your year in our innovation playground is over, you'll be ready for a new challenge.

      The successful candidate will have:
-- A proven commitment to accuracy and word editing.
-- Design experience (either print or Web) that goes beyond aesthetics, picas or pixels into real visual storytelling.
-- An ability to envision multiple ways users interact with information, and plan packages for digital and print products with the user in mind.
-- Curiosity about and comfort with digital tools and trends.
-- Comfort with or desire/ability to learn: InDesign, html, CSS, Photoshop.
--A bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field.

Application screening will begin immediately. Applications must include a letter of interest, a C.V. or resume and a list of professional references. Please visit http://hrs.missouri.edu/find-a-job/academic/ to access the online application system. The job opening ID is 9987.

The University of Missouri is committed to cultural diversity and it is expected that the successful candidate will share this commitment. MU is an Equal Employment Opportunity/ADA institution and encourages applications from women and minority candidates.
