The Detroit Free Press has an immediate opening for an experienced full-time copy editor.
The copy editor must:
Demonstrate good judgment in editing for print and digital platforms.
Collaborate with reporters, photographers, content editors, digital editors and page designers to produce the best content possible.
Have a flair for writing informative, evocative and provocative headlines that go beyond the obvious and engage readers getting the most important words in the biggest type.
Craft informative photo cutlines.
Demonstrate grammatical and style precision.
Aggressively search for information from reliable sources when copy editing stories.
Help resolve any challenges that arise during production.
Have a basic understanding of social media platforms and search-engine optimized headline writing.
Become a student of how the Free Press and other news organizations and websites present information in ways that engage readers.
At least 3 years experience on a newspaper or Web copy desk.
Be able to work flexible hours and weekends.
Not required, but other desirable skills:
Previous experience with copy editing content on digital platforms.
Knowledge of Web analytic software such as Omniture.
Knowledge of page design principles. Page design is not part of the job, but
copy editors should know enough to work with designers in making pages better.
Ability to compile and edit national and world news coverage in an informed manner.
The editor will work evening and weekend shifts that generally begin at 4 p.m., though some shifts will vary.
