Senior Sports Copy Editor, The Orange County Register, Santa Ana, Calif.
- The Orange County Register is looking for a senior-level sports copy editor to help us create a top-quality sports section that is lively and essential to fans
Responsibilities include shaping stories for publication to Register standards by:
â¢ reading the story and correcting any mistakes including spelling, grammar, style and common facts
â¢ writing engaging headlines, captions and refers
â¢ checking graphics
â¢ trimming the story to fit
â¢ raising any issues of inaccuracy, omission, bias or libel
â¢ contacting the reporter, columnist or editor for clarification
â¢ adhering to deadlines
In addition, candidates must have a deep knowledge and love of sports -- especially those of highest interest to Orange County fans â" and approach the job with a sense of fun.
Candidates must have leadership skills and must be versatile, with the ability to lay out pages, select wire stories, post and prioritize stories and photos online, send text alerts, and craft blog and Web content into high-quality newspaper packages. The successful candidate must be knowledgeable in Associated Press style and must flourish under extreme deadline pressure. The job requires comfort with editing stories in various print and digital platforms. Experience with CCI or Onset is a plus. Night and weekend work is required.
Ideal candidates will have the ability and judgment to slot stories, publish late-breaking news and send pages with no one backing them up.
This is a collaborative department so a senior copy editor needs to be able to work well with other members of the copy desk as well as designers, photo editors, line editors and other members of the newsroom to meet shared goals.
Candidates should have a bachelorâs degree and at least five years of copy editing experience. Knowledge of Orange County is a plus.
