      The Advancement Communications department develops print, online, and social media marketing strategies to increase engagement and philanthropic support for Tufts among alumni, parents, and friends of the university. It provides leadership, expertise, counsel, and coordination for communication strategies and for the production of hundreds of deliverables vital to the overall success of the Advancement Division as it supports university priorities. It supports the work of advancement colleagues across 16 school and source units.

      The position of Editor is an essential member of the University Advancement Communications team. The Editor is directly responsible for the editorial oversight/management, and creation of copy for a wide variety of print and online publications, including the advancement newsletter, sections of the university's alumni magazines, direct mail and e-mail solicitations and marketing pieces, websites, and donor reports. In consultation with the Director of editorial and creative services, the Editor will build the story list for key publications and write the copy for the majority of these publications.

      The Editor has direct management responsibility for an Associate Editor, and is responsible for providing oversight for his or her work as well as his or her professional growth and development. The Editor also manages a range of freelancers (performing either copyedits and/or developmental edits on their work products as necessary), and is ultimately responsible for the development of the majority of content produced by Advancement Communications. The Editor exhibits an ability to work under pressure and juggle competing demands in a portfolio of high-level writing projects (including profiles of major donors and prominent alumni) while maintaining an impeccable customer-service orientation with all clients. The ideal candidate is team-oriented and highly collaborative. The ideal candidate must adhere to protocols for contact with donors and prospects, maintaining a high level of professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality, and frequently consulting with development officers on the best approaches to both the interviews and the finished product in order to help the fundraisers accomplish their goals.

      Job Requirements

      Basic Requirements:

      • Bachelor's degree
      • Five to seven (5-7) years of experience in communications/publications, with experience developing story lists; writing a variety of pieces on deadline, including news stories, profiles, features, advancement copy, and marketing copy; overseeing and editing the work of others; and contributing to a full range of types of publications; and one to two (1-2) years of management experience
      • Must possess an incredibly sharp attention to detail, especially in regard to conducting interviews and getting the details of the story pitch-perfect
      • Familiarity with writing and editing for the web
      • Must be able to balance multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, dynamic, deadline-driven environment
      • Impeccable attention to detail is mandatory as are excellent organizational skills, strong writing and absolute mastery of style and grammar
      • Must have exemplary customer service skills
      • Willingness to learn basic web tools, including production/scheduling software
      • Strong organizational skills, including the management of multiple versions of documents, and proven ability to prioritize under pressure and to deal with frequent changes
      • Requires ability to think strategically and to help devise and execute operational plans, as well as strong interpersonal qualities including exceptional organizational skills, pro-activeness, and a commitment to follow-through
      • Occasional travel required

      Preferred Qualifications:

      Impeccable verbal and written communication skills, preferably in translating a university's priorities to an alumni and donor audience for the purposes of fundraising and raising the level of alumni and donor engagement are a strong plus. Experience managing freelancers and securing approvals from clients is beneficial. Experience in messaging and branding work, especially in an academic setting is valuable.
