Medscape from WebMD is seeking an experienced freelance copy editor to work between the hours of 5-8 pm ET daily (usually Monday through Friday). Specifically, this individual will copy edit news articles in accordance with a blend of AMA and house styles and publish articles on Medscape.com. This position requires basic medical knowledge, solid medical copy editing experience, keen attention to detail, and the abilities to meet tight deadlines and work with others in a virtual environment.

      Responsibilities include:

      - Copy edit original news from Medscape staff and freelance writers, including fact-checking and querying reporters.
      - Convert files to HTML format using conversion software.

      - Enter news articles into Medscape's news publishing system, tag articles for related concepts and specialties, and publish the articles.

The copy editor will work on breaking news, which needs to be published on an as-needed basis within 30 minutes to an hour, as well as on less time-sensitive news, which needs to be published by the end of the evening. Some daytime work is also a possibility, but the number of hours will generally be 15-20 hours per week at the start.

The position requires a detailed knowledge of AMA style, at least 7 years of copy editing experience, facility with editing for online publication, basic familiarity with HTML coding, and a high comfort level with proprietary publishing systems. West Coast location is preferred but not required. A mandatory background check will be performed.
