      Columbia College Chicago is an urban institution of over 12,000 undergraduate and graduate students emphasizing arts, media, and communications in a liberal arts setting.

      The Department of Publications is seeking applications for a Part Time Editorial Assistant. Reporting to the Director of Communications, the part-time Editorial Assistant (16-20 hours per week) researches, compiles, writes, edits, and proofs content for a variety of print and online communications vehicles. The EA also manages a variety of regular communications vehicles using a Content Management System (CMS).

      Duties & Responsibilities
      • Manage college's daily events e-newsletter, Tally-ho to Go, by obtaining information, editing for content and space, copyediting and fact checking all information to ensure content is error free, loading all content into content management system (CMS).
      • Manage college's weekly faculty and staff e-newsletter, ColumbiaOnline, by researching, compiling, writing, editing, and loading content into content management system.
      • Write, edit, and manage other print and online content as assigned. Possible projects may include DEMO magazine and the college's website.

      Skills and Abilities
      • Exceptional copyediting skills; must be able to find and fix copy to ensure it is accurate, complete, grammatically correct, and conforms to house style. A copyediting test will be required.
      • Strong fact-checking skills; must be skilled at checking facts, statements, quotes, and links against original sources to ensure accuracy.
      • Proven, excellent writing and reporting skills; must have "nose for news" and be adept at writing a variety of content, including news stories, promotional blurbs, features, and content for various media. A writing test will be required.
      • Strong command of Chicago Manual of Style or Associated Press style
      • Experience with or ability to quickly learn Content Management System to load and post online content.
      • Good decision-making skills and ability to be self-motivated and to work independently as needed.
      • Polished interpersonal/communications skills to collaborate with a variety of stakeholders across the college.
      • Solid organizational and time management skills; accountability for handling multiple concurrent projects and meeting set deadlines.
      • Sound judgment under pressure, consistent with institutional priorities and best professional practices.
      • Consistently approach challenges in positive, creative and solution-oriented manner.
      • Work set days/schedule (to be determined with supervisor) in line with department needs.
      • Proficiency in Mac or PC computer software platforms as well as Microsoft Office.


      Experience, Education, and Training
      • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or related field, or comparable experience, required.
      • Minimum 1 year of professional experience in fact-checking, copyediting, writing, and proofreading.
      • Knowledge of/interest in visual, performing, media and/or communication arts.
