Copy desk chief, American Medical News, Chicago
- The successful candidate will serve in Chicago as the Manager of the copy desk for American Medical News, an award-winning print (250,000 circulation) and online (amednews.com) news source for physicians and one of the nation's best-read medical publications. It is published by the American Medical Association. This is both a hands-on and management position requiring extremely strong editing and headline writing skills and stylebook knowledge, as well as the ability to lead a team of two other copy editors in a fast-paced, multimedia environment. Responsibilities include: hands-on editing and page proofing of articles and related material, copyfitting, application of type styles and formatting codes, Web edition conversion, setting copy desk standards, maintaining and updating our in-house style manual, and participating in story development conferences. The manager of the copy desk also serves as lead staff member for copyflow and output of social media postings.
-- Bachelor's degree, preferably in journalism.
-- At least five years experience as a full-time member or chief of a copy desk, preferably on a daily or weekly publication, preferably in the health care field. Demonstrated management ability, experience training others preferred.
-- Demonstrated ability to work under deadline pressure.
-- Demonstrated very strong editing skills - - in terms of style, grammar, rewriting and restructuring.
-- Must have mastered AP style, have (or able to gain) familiarity with AMA style, and have knowledge of when and how to use medical references, including Dorlands, Merck, PDR, etc.
-- Demonstrated very strong headline writing skills, both to print counts and for Web SEO.
-- PC literacy. Expertise with Microsoft office suite of software and newsroom editorial systems preferred.
