- Nov 1, 2012Responsible for ensuring the quality of text and layouts for SHRM-wide products, with day-to-day oversight of specific client products. Regular products include editorial materials (for example, HR Magazine, SHRM Online news, the SHRM Conference Daily, newsletters, e-newsletters and SHRM-published books) and marketing and promotional materials (for example, brochures, advertisements, post cards, catalogs and numerous promotional e-mails.) Act as point of contact for production flow between the client department and the Design & Production Department.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Copy edit and proofread all text in assigned products for readability, accuracy, clarity, consistency, spelling, grammar, punctuation and good taste, ensuring that it meets quality standards guided by the SHRM Style Guide and Word List, the 2012 Associated Press Stylebook and Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 10th Edition.
Work with editors and writers to resolve any substantive questions and ensure clarity in text. Re-write and copy fit text as needed. Ensure final approval of editors, writers and Copy Desk Manager as needed.
Act as a point of contact between the client department and the Design & Production Department through multiple rounds of corrections to ensure that print layouts incorporate all relevant items and corrections, text is the appropriate length, spacing is used effectively and layouts are consistent.
Check all charts, tables, graphs and other page elements in assigned products for style and accuracy and cross-check any text (including figures) that also appears in the main article.
Prepare text as necessary for the Design & Production Department by formatting it to correct specifications.
Perform quality assurance checks on digital bluelines from the printer as needed.
Make recommendations forand help update, publicize and enforcethe SHRM Style Guide and Word List, and create and maintain supplemental guides.
Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or related field.
At least 5 years of experience proofreading and copy editing publications.
Firm grasp of English language, grammar, punctuation and commonly used styles. Previous use of AP Style is preferred.
Proven ability to proofread and copy edit on deadline accurately and quickly using Track Changes in MS Word and using standard proofreader's marks on paper.
Ability to organize work and time productively and meet the demands of competing priorities while requiring minimal supervision from the Copy Desk Manager.
Good computer skills, Microsoft Word and Internet Explorer experience preferred.
