Subject: An anniversary of a sighting...
Today is December 22, 2006, the 64th anniversary of the legendary German demand that the 101st Airborne Division, surrounded at Bastogne, surrender the town. The American reply to the demand is, of course, the single word, "Nuts!" which has justifiably gone down in American military lore. The demand was issued by German Lt. Gen. Heinrich von Luttwitz, who commanded the corps that had surrounded Bastogne, and it was a bluff. His superiors were furious when they learned of his surrender demand, as they knew they lacked the wherewithal to take the town. What makes this interesting to us is that Von Luttwitz's command was the 47th Panzer Corps. And there you have it.
