      In 1878, a constitutional amendment that would give women the right to vote
      was introduced into the U.S. Senate. How long did it take for the amendment to become law in the United States? 42 years. On this date, the Susan B. Anthony Amendment, or Women's Suffrage Amendment, was introduced in the Senate, but it wasn't signed into law until Aug. 26, 1920.

      In 1901, oil was discovered at the Spindletop claim near Beaumont, Texas, launching the Southwest oil boom.
