They are also releasing the full Gettysburg movie on DVD sometime in April. I know that they showed the full version of Gettysburg on TNT a couple of years ago

the acting is terrible, and they had good actors in Gettysburg but sadly miscast, Martib Sheen as Lee, they didn't act so much as pose through the picture and the soundtrack was intrusive and overbearing.

While neither movie was "Glory," I think Martin Sheen portrayed Lee as Shaara wrote him.

all the good vibes from Glory were stilled by Gettysburg and G & G,
G-burg is passable but the other was terrible.

with the 150th fast approaching it's a shame too.
a well done movie can make money and the CW remains a popular topic among Americans.

First, I'm back after a long period of not commenting because it was getting pretty rough out there with major disagreements taking away from any hope of learning anything new. I hope that's changed. Second, Both movies are coming out in extended versions May 24 2011. See http://ronmaxwell.com/ home page. I, for one, look forward to it.
Purists, like Raymond, may not like them (even if he actually saw them) but Gettysburg didn't bomb and probably ignited a new generation into researching the Civil War. It definitely didn't hurt attendance at the Park. Gods and Generals, on the other hand, was disappointing in that it seemed very preachy and concentrated too much on one man with too much dialogue. It came out around the same time as Cold Mountain (both probably due to the interest/sucess generated by Gettysburg). Visiting the other website that was noted in an earlier post, is the background that I had never heard. That Gods and Generals was released in a shorter form due to an expected showing on TNT. Regardless, I found the large gaps in the story line to be very annoying and feel the director was trying to "stuff" too much time in too little space. I will take the time to give the extended directors cut a fighting chance to win me over. I disagree with Raymond about the acting in Gettysburg (I agree though, Martin Sheen made a strange General Lee) and would take the accuracy of that film over the also entertaining but historically questionable Glory. That said, I would still watch Glory because I truly enjoy all aspects of the always interesting War Between the States (Just kidding with you Raymond)and I think that is the point of most Civil War movies. To entertain, make money and spark an interest into looking deeper at this great conflict and unique moment in time of our nation.
I look forward to learning more from this group and hope we all learn to be more willing to hear different points of view in a more tolerant, and respectful, environment. We don't have to overwhelm and disrespect each other to make a point. We also will never agree on everything but we do share an interest. Thank you for hosting this forum Coly and I'll be checking in more often.

Jim, nice to hear from you again.

I think Civil War buffs, historians and purists get a little carried
away with wanting everything in a Civil War movie to be 100% accurate.
When the History Channel showed the documentary on Sherman's March to
the Sea another message board I belong too was complaining about small
details like the buttons on Sherman's uniform. Producers do need to try
hard in presenting historical material as accurate as possible but due
to budgets, editing and other factors that won't happen.

in a shorter form due to an expected showing on TNT. Regardless, I found
the large gaps in the story line to be very annoying and feel the
director was trying to "stuff" too much time in too little space. I will
take the time to give the extended directors cut a fighting chance to
win me over. I disagree with Raymond about the acting in Gettysburg (I
agree though, Martin Sheen made a strange General Lee) and would take
the accuracy of that film over the also entertaining but historically
questionable Glory. That said, I would still watch Glory because I truly
enjoy all aspects of the always interesting War Between the States (Just
kidding with you Raymond)and I think that is the point of most Civil War
movies. To entertain, make money and spark an interest into looking
deeper at this great conflict and unique moment in time of our nation.
                      > I look forward to learning more from this group and hope we all learn
to be more willing to hear different points of view in a more tolerant,
and respectful, environment. We don't have to overwhelm and disrespect
each other to make a point. We also will never agree on everything but
we do share an interest. Thank you for hosting this forum Coly and I'll
                      be checking in more often.

of us know the movie was based on Michael Shaara's "Killer Angels." IMO,
Sheen nailed the Lee Shaara described in his book. The late Brian Pohanka,
who was a historical advisor for the movie, told me his only complaint about
the way Lee was portrayed is Marse Robert would have never appeared outside
his tent in shirt sleeves and a vest and no jacket. He tried to talk Ron
Maxwell out of doing the scene that way but he was overruled by the
                        director.

                        Regards,
                        Teej

Jim, nice to hear from you again.

I think Civil War buffs, historians and purists get a little carried
away with wanting everything in a Civil War movie to be 100% accurate.
When the History Channel showed the documentary on Sherman's March to
the Sea another message board I belong too was complaining about small
details like the buttons on Sherman's uniform. Producers do need to try
hard in presenting historical material as accurate as possible but due
to budgets, editing and other factors that won't happen.

                          Coly

any hope of learning anything new. I hope that's changed. Second, Both
movies are coming out in extended versions May 24 2011. See
http://ronmaxwell.com/ home page. I, for one, look forward to it.
                          > Purists, like Raymond, may not like them (even if he actually saw
them) but Gettysburg didn't bomb and probably ignited a new generation
into researching the Civil War. It definitely didn't hurt attendance at
the Park. Gods and Generals, on the other hand, was disappointing in
that it seemed very preachy and concentrated too much on one man with
too much dialogue. It came out around the same time as Cold Mountain
(both probably due to the interest/sucess generated by Gettysburg).
Visiting the other website that was noted in an earlier post, is the
background that I had never heard. That Gods and Generals was released
in a shorter form due to an expected showing on TNT.

                            A couple of quick thoughts.
First to Brian Pohanka.. Unfortunately I had in essence been just introduced to Brian shortly before his passing. And as I have watched him over the years on Civil War Journal, and a couple of other things, I have been in awe of his knowledge and ability to recall things he had learned. Like it was at his finger tips. I miss  him. And I didn't even know him half as well as others did. And that is a deep regret I have. I suspect if he had lived, he and I would have been fast friends.
To Gettysburg... Gettysburg for me was a very good movie in that at least it made an attempt to introduce the public to a time in our history that was so important to us as a nation. Though flawed (Time tables annoy the heck out of me and they are numerous as the parts of the battle portrayed don't even come close in some places to actual events), it was a great way to entice others into this wonderful obsession as my wife calls it. There are other parts that annoy me such as portraying Chamberlain and the 20th Maine being the sole saviors of the Union Army and LRT. It pushes the memories of not only the common ground pounder that day, but Hazlett, Weed, O'Rorke, and Vincent's efforts especially Vincent's efforts to save that bloody piece of real estate. Even Warren gets short shifted on this. but it was from the book.
Sheens Lee for me was portrayed accurately other then showing up outside his tent as mentioned already, in that it is common knowledge that Lee was ill by then. The heart disease that will take his life 7 short years later was causing him distress, the lack of sleep, lousy diet all played on him. And then Stuarts little jaunts didn't help matters much. Sheens Lee was probably as close as one can get to it all.
I still watch the movie. I have the directors cut, and it explains a lot of what's going on.
I am looking forward to the Directors cut of G & G. Just to see if what was cut out, makes a difference. We shall see.

Gettysburg was accurate enough, it was the execution, the acting was terrible and the soundtrack intrusive.

                            > I look forward to learning more from this group and hope we all learn

and respectful, environment. We don't have to overwhelm and disrespect
each other to make a point. We also will never agree on everything but
we do share an interest. Thank you for hosting this forum Coly and I'll

I was unaware Pohanka had died, he did great work and clearly he was immersed in the era as shown by his facial hair, sad to read that that. cancer is a scourge.

This is the other JIM.. ;-).. I too have been pretty much just a lurker, but this thread tweaked me..

Producers do need to try
hard in presenting historical material as accurate as possible but due
to budgets, editing and other factors that won't happen.

them) but Gettysburg didn't bomb and probably ignited a new generation
into researching the Civil War.

                                Ray,
The reason I liked Sheens portrayal of him, is that as one who has struggled with health issues, and life issues in a small way I can relate to how he was feeling. And all of that impacts ones thought processes. Especially some of the decisions that Lee made. It helps to understand how those life events were affecting this decision to push Longstreets assault. It was obvious too, through that portrayal which I believe is true, that he was leaning on Longstreet for his support and help. And Old Pete IMHO let him down. But that's for another discussion. It was obvious that Lee missed Stonewalls input and interaction. I know I know that's not shared in the movie. I agree. After all its from Killer Angels.  But those of us who know this see how that sifts through.

The acting at times is a bit welllll rough for me. I am one of those who think that Sam Elliots Buford was a very good job, though as both Eric Wittenberg and J.D. Petruzzi who have studied the man far more then I have, shared with me that JNO was not that verbose. But then again, one his own brigade commanders said that Buford was not himself that day. They had never seen the General so wellll upset or agitated as he was that day..
To Chamberlain for a minute. Jeff Daniels portrayal of JLC for me at least is spot on.
In closing one other thing. Though I had been studying the Civil War for almost 40 years by the time the movie came out, it was the movie that awakened me to JLC, and all the others. And then tweaked me, or lit a spark in me that pushed me into further study of the events of those eventful three days, and the people involved. All of that led me to where I am now. Deeply engrossed in the actions of the units from my home state who were involved in it. The men from New Jersey.. A small state. but never the less, they were all involved and deeply entwined in the events in the places that all now ring down through history. Devils Den, The Wheatfield, The Peach Orchard, The Angle, Culps Hill, and the Fight for the Klingle farm or Sickles Salient. With out the movie, I may I missed that. And that would have been my loss.

I didn't think Sheen was a good Lee, I thought all the acting was flat and lifeless. too much posing as opposed to acting, they liked recreating old photos too. like the pic of the captured rebs, they posed it exactly like the photo.

I was unaware Pohanka had died, he did great work and clearly he was immersed in the era as shown by his facial hair, sad to read that that. cancer is a scourge.

This is the other JIM.. ;-).. I too have been pretty much just a lurker, but this thread tweaked me..

Producers do need to try
hard in presenting historical material as accurate as possible but due
to budgets, editing and other factors that won't happen.

them) but Gettysburg didn't bomb and probably ignited a new generation
into researching the Civil War.

Well, to each his own, I suppose. I thought Stephen Lang did a fantastic job as the somewhat vacuous George Pickett; Andrew Prine captured the essence of Dick Garnett still suffering from Jackson's treatment of him during the Valley Campaign; Morgan Shepherd was able to convey the stubborn, ever complaining Issac Trimble admirably and even Richard Jordan, who died of a brain tumor shortly after the movie was released,  did a good job depicting a man torn between duty and the fear of being responsible for the death of his dearest friend. I'm not sure how much more animated Longstreet could have been under the circumstances so, IMO, Berenger played the Longstreet of Gettysburg as well as anyone could have.  The one performance that was like nails on a chalkboard to me was the guy, whose name escapes me at the moment, who played Johnston Pettigrew.

I was unaware Pohanka had died, he did great work and clearly he was immersed in the era as shown by his facial hair, sad to read that that. cancer is a scourge.

Brian was brilliant but he was also a generous and giving person. He was a long time member of a Civil War discussion group that I moderate and there was no question directed to him that wasn't answered and quickly. The Civil War community lost a friend and a scholar when Brian passed away.

"he was sick, it was Longstreet's fault, it was Stuart's fault" yada yada. Lee rode with the Army and he was up and about on the field during all 3 days yet no one he dealt with mentions it.

                                    Ray,
The reason I liked Sheens portrayal of him, is that as one who has struggled with health issues, and life issues in a small way I can relate to how he was feeling.

This is the other JIM.. ;-).. I too have been pretty much just a lurker, but this thread tweaked me..

Producers do need to try
hard in presenting historical material as accurate as possible but due
to budgets, editing and other factors that won't happen.

into researching the Civil War.

Producers do need to try
hard in presenting historical material as accurate as possible but due
to budgets, editing and other factors that won't happen.

them) but Gettysburg didn't bomb and probably ignited a new generation
into researching the Civil War.

Thank you Teej... Actually Pettigrew was played by some one who had played James Bond in one movie only. His name escapes me.. But it should be in the movies

When it comes to Brian, and IIRC I have shared my story with you at least Teej. While in essence in his last days he shared his knowledge of G.K.. Warren with me in several emails and a phone call.. I had responded to an email he had sent me, and never got a reply.. Found out several hours later, he had passed away... I know I didnt know him as well as you, and Eric Wittenberg, Pat Schroder and several others. But dang.. I miss him.. And we lost a true historian, friend, and staunch supporter of CW preservation. And if I miss him.. Oh my, how much you all must miss him that knew him well..

"weak" in front of your men. During Roosevelt's presidency no one
mentioned he was in a wheel chair, Woodrow Wilson was very sick during
his presidency as was Kennedy. Being sick does not mean you can not walk
around in front of the men in fact it is reassuring for soldiers to see
their commander in charge and not laid up in bed.

If you are the commander of an army you do not want to appear to be
"weak" in front of your men.

I found them both entertaining and am sure that Gettysburg at least ushered in many new people who after viewing wanted to find out more. We got more than a few new recruits who wanted to be part of the history and brotherhood of reinacting. If for no other reason than piquing ones interest it worked for me. My grandkids 9 and 5 love Gettysburg and every time they see me in uniform ask a million questions

no one mentioned he was in wheel chair, but it was common knowledge , not so with Lee and his "illness" no one seemed to notice and none of the stories come from those who actually knew him. it was a post war spin that appeared in the early days of the "Lost Cause"

If you are the commander of an army you do not want to appear to be
"weak" in front of your men.
