Group Description

1933

"She lived on the Menominee Indian Reservation until age 13. For four years, she attended an Native American boarding school in Flandreau, S.D. When she was 18, Frechette moved to Chicago, where she worked as a nursemaid and waitress. Frechette married Welton Spark, who was sentenced to prison in 1933 for a mail robbery."

"Like Maria Callas's voice, Susan Sontag's mind, to borrow a phrase from the great filmmaker Werner Schroeter (one of countless underappreciated artists Sontag championed), was "a comet passing once in a hundred years." In a dauntingly, often viciously anti-intellectual society, Sontag made being an intellectual attractive."

"Etta Z. Falconer was born in Tupelo, Mississippi in 1933. She received her A.B. in mathematics from Fisk University in 1953, where her role model was Dr. Evelyn Boyd Granville, and her M.S. at the University of Wisconsin in 1954. After receiving her master's degree, she became an Instructor at Okolona College."
