Group Description

"She had many distinguished ancestors, including John Brockington, who has been immortalized as the "British Officer" with Francis Marion in the famous "Sweet Potato Supper" portrait. She is also a direct descendant of William Screven, who formed the First Baptist Church in Charleston, S.C., in 1671, thus bringing the Baptist religion to the South. She was very proud of her heritage, but she was even prouder of her legacy."

"The estate boasts beautiful parkland, but no paths to walk through. It is split by the Lugar River, crossed by a steeply arched John Adam bridge, but bits of the balustrade are in storage. The 2,000 acres include a walled garden overlooking the river, entirely abandoned and overgrown with trees, and a grove of towering redwoods, an 18th-century favourite. There's a derelict water-powered sawmill and the 1671 dovecote that is the estate's oldest building. They are all full of possibilities, in Schafer's eyes, for tourist draws beyond the house, and he even talks of stonemason or woodcutting schools."

"Considered herself to be the "principal minister" of her husband, Carlos II (1665-1700), after their marriage in 1691, and she was politically very influential. After her husband's death, she was member of The Governing Board from 1.-16. November. The Board had no formal chairman, but she had the "preferred vote"."
