Group Description

This group is intended to share information specific to modeling 15" gauge railways on 45mm (gauge 1) track. Such models are typically scratchbuilt, adapting castings and wheelsets intended for other scales (typically 7/8" scale). This group is intended to share specific details of such adaptations which might be too esoteric for the more generic 15" gauge groups, and to share general modeling information which is particular to these scales.

For purists, this concepts works out to a scale of 36mm/foot, or 36n15 as it has been designated by Peter Chandler. This is roughly 1:8.5 scale, and a 5'10" man should be about 210mm or 8.25" tall. 8" action figures may be suitable for use in this scale, as may some 1:9 scale figures and accessories (Breyer’s “Traditional Size” horse figurines).

For slackers who can accept modeling 14.17" gauge as 15", it is much easier to just call it 1:8 scale or 1.5"/foot. In this scale, a 5'10" man would be about 8.75", and hence some 9" action figures may be suitable. There is a limited offering of 1:8 scale products on the die-cast market, including large, overpriced tractors, a scattering of motorcycles, and a couple of antique gasoline/petrol engines which seem to appear regularly on eBay.
