Hi Z Scalers,
I have been evaluating the AZL GP38-2 for possible
super-detailing with replacement SS handrails and it
looks good to me. The AZL engines are already very
beautiful, with nice body painting and pad printing of logos
and engine numbers. Also, accurately designed bogies.
Last, but not least, true dimensional accuracy in length, width
and height of the body-- an amazing scale achievement!
But Dominique is correct in his observation; the handrails are
a little thick, so there is no reason why an inexpensive set of
replacement detail items cannot make this a perfect looking locomotive!
The new handrails will also have sets for both front and rear "chains"
hanging between the center stanchions (MTL does this with
their diesels and theirs are also etched metal handrails).
The rooftop fans are already nicely imprinted but there is
no reason that I should not also provide stainless steel
fan grill inserts that will make this feature stand out even
more. After all, we are always observing our little engines
from slightly above, so this feature will be very apparent
to the viewer with these inserts.
Some of the railroads also attached window "sun visors"
over the side windows of the cab. I will make sure these optionals
will be on the fret for those who are modeling those road-names.
The Micron Art kit GP38-2 detailing kit should be available
in a couple of months... I'm just getting started ;>)
