The essentials of political action leading to
empowerment of our fellow human beings
Everyone remembers Alan Dershowitz's public call to the IDF to
implement a policy of reprisals against the Palestinians ("New
Response to Palestinian Terrorism", Jerusalem Post, March 11, 2002)
thus placing himself in the same league as the Nazi war criminals who
were tried and convicted at Nuremberg.
Everyone remembers Arik Sharon's straight-talking right-hand man Dov
Weisglass, who disclosed that the purpose of the "unilateral
disengagement from Gaza" is to put the "peace process in formaldehyde"
and prevent the establishment of an "independent Palestinian state",
i.e., thus pricking the balloon of the "Road Map". Now, the same
Weisglass has again graced us with his Nazi-like thinking, whereby
Israel's siege and blockade and economic terrorism against the
residents of the West Bank and Gaza Strip ("visit to the dietician")
is to "make them get thin, not make them die".
This talk, of course, is merely one aspect of a consistent policy of
ethnic cleansing and murder in the service of a supremacist
The Nazi-like metaphor is often overused, and misused. The State of
Israel has not erected factories with assembly lines to exterminate
people on an industrial scale. But, let us remember that before
systematic extermination there was incitement, and de-humanization,
and incarceration, and ghettoization, and starvation. In this sense,
Zionism takes its cue from Nazism.
Despite the foothold that Nazi-like thinking has gained in the Israeli
elite, and its supporters abroad, commentators in the Israeli press
are expressing fear and concern for the ability of their State to come
through the current period without isolating, endangering, or
alienating the residents of the Jewish State. Even mainstream Israeli
opinion makers are agonizing over the political crisis in which
Zionism finds itself. As Avi Shavit writes: "These questions are
existential ones. They require new thinking, new strategy, new
discourse". See: http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/683436.html
Aluf Benn describes the problem, but thinks the solution is to
"Improve the Image". See:

This would be a good time for supporters of democracy and human rights
to "come out of the closet" and proclaim our program loud and clear.
The fact is that the non-stop turmoil caused by the Israeli occupation
of Palestine, and the US-led occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan -- and
the non-stop incitement against the oppressed and the downtrodden, and
the threats of more wars and more uprisings and less civil liberties
has produced a volatile situation in most countries. In the face of
this volatility, and turmoil, good people need to be reminded of the
essentials of political action leading to empowerment of our fellow
Israelis who want peace and democracy must act to remove the colonial
burden from the people of Palestine, and let the refugees return.
That is the only way for them to demonstrate that they have no desire
or intention to lord it over the Palestinians. That is the only way
for them to demonstrate solidarity. Short of solidarity, Israelis
are stuck in the position of masters who are threatened by their
Palestinians who want freedom must understand that central to their
goal is winning over enlightened public opinion in Israel and
overseas. Demanding forthrightly recognition of the right of return,
and demanding unconditionally a unified, democratic and free
Palestine, with a future for all its residents, Arabs and Jews, is the
only way to demonstrate that the goal is liberation, not domination --
coexistence , and not genocide.
In Iraq, it is clear that it is the US-led occupation that is behind
the inter-ethnic terrorism, and that only a united front against
imperialism can build a democratic future for the peoples of Iraq.
All over the world, massive demonstrations are planned for March 18th.
This will be the opportunity for Americans to show that they have
learned the lessons of George Bush's "War on Terror" and to demand the
immediate unconditional removal of US troops from Iraq and
Afghanistan. Hands off Iran !
In Canada, we will also demand the withdrawal of Canadian soldiers and
police from Afghanistan and Haiti, and we will declare that US war
resisters are welcome here.
In all countries, we must say: The Palestinians need our help!
Israeli peace activists need our help! Stop arms shipments to Israel!
Boycott Israeli consumer products! Support the Palestinians in
their quest for freedom and democracy! Down with the Israeli
occupation! Let the Palestine refugees return home!
All out March 18th !
