My previous computer (HP Compaq NX7400 with Core2Duo & 4 GB RAM) worked fine and there was no need to replace it.
However, there was a great opportunity, and therefore three weeks ago
I become a user of Samsung series 3 with I7 CPU, 8 GB RAM and 1 TB HDD. Operating System: Windows 8.
My first thought is how to go back to the well known Windows 7 Ultimate/64 but I decided to test the functionality of what I have with the new Windows.
My equipment is:
- Elecraft KX3
- Yaesu FT-100.
Software I use is:
Virtual Audio Cable,
Virtual Serial Port Emulator,
I was very skeptical specifically about VSPE and 4th Dimension
The past three weeks have been very pleasant surprise.
Each of these programs is working fine.
The computer is a very efficient and fast. When I use the Flex-1500 with PowerSDR, VSPE, VAC, Dimension4 and WSJTX + Chrome & Skype CPU usage is only around 5-8% and 10% memory usage.
Even when running CW Skimmer CPU usage does not exceed 12-15%.
No objections to the work VAC or VSPE, but Dimension4 needs to be run as an administrator to synchronize computer's clock (just like in Windows 7).
WSJTX decodes very quickly, within 2-3 seconds, regardless to the number of decoded signals.
Occasionally decoding time is around 7 seconds.
WSJTX from version 0.95 is a very mature and stable program.
In my opinion there is no need to show the message "Untested version" while running the program.
CAT is a problem, but probably it is not dependent on the operating system.
When I start WSJTX and my TRX is enabled on streak which is visible in the program window, the right frequency setting is not followed.
In WSJTX I have to select another band and then one more time select the right one.
Another inconvenience is that you cannot save your configuration and run the program with a parameter denoting a specific TRX, such as WSJTX-Flex-1500.
Currently, for each TRX I have a separate installation in three different folders with three different logs.
When you have a 1 TB HDD capacity is not a terrible nuisance, but maybe it is good to think how to solve this problem.
Saving the configuration to a file is useful cause of one more reason.
At home I use an additional sound interface E-MU 0204, and at portable work only card in the computer.
Every time after work out I have to restore the original settings.
Joe, WSJTX is really a good job.
Now I look forward to new WSJT
Unfortunately, despite many attempts WSJT9 and WSJT7 do not activate PTT so I can only listening to the EME, but not transmit.
Joe Thank You for WSJTX
