for the "in-the-what-it-is-worth" category. i heat with a jotul f400.
the only complaint is that i probably should have gotten the next size
up; now i'm just too lazy to advertise and arrange to get another. it
heats about 1800 square feet, totally open plan (only 2 doored rooms,
both bathrooms), two floors. the stove is in the studio that is a walk-
in basement area. this past winter (mountains of wnc) got bitterly
cold for this old woman with terribly long term high winds that
brought the temps down to sub zero. then the jotul only did marginally
but i am a long time believer in layering and then more layering.
i've never had a problem with smoke when i open the door (my smoke
detector is only about 20 feet away and has never (she said knocking
wood) gone off. and i try to burn hot; i only clean out the chimney
once a season unless i fear a problem. i like the simplicity of the
jotul...put the wood in, close the door, open the air flow, wait about
20 minutes, close the air flow to half or just below and walk away.
since i live by myself, using a wood stove...and a chain saw have been
learning processes, but very satisying lessons.
