Dear Wayland Voter,
Preliminary cost estimates for each of the three options being
considered by the High School Building Committee were presented at
the HSBC meeting July 1, as follows:
OPTION 1 - $56,109,116
Maintain and renovate all existing buildings.
Add new buildings for Gym, Auditorium, Science Labs, additional
classroom space, and Commons addition.
OPTION 2 $53,981,609
Maintain and renovate existing Field House, Math/English Building,
Arts Building, and Media Center.
Demolish Language, Social Studies, Science, and Commons buildings.
Add new buildings for Commons, Gym, Auditorium, Science Labs, and
majority of classroom space.
OPTION 3 $55,493,557
Maintain and renovate existing Field House.
Demolish all other existing buildings.
Build entire facility new except for Field House.
These options will be presented in detail at a public forum Thursday,
July 8, Wayland High School L1 Lecture Hall, 7:30pm. (Tour of high
school begins at 6:30pm, meet in cafeteria.) This public forum is
your primary opportunity to ask questions of the committee and to let
them know what you think, before the committee selects one option to
be fully developed and presented to voters for their approval or
rejection. (Selection of one option scheduled to occur by July 29.)
It's important to note that the cost estimates above are NOT complete
or final. Several big ticket items are not included (synthetic
athletic field, air conditioning, others). Also, based on reactions
to the above estimates by several committee members, it's likely that
efforts will be made to reduce these estimates. The project manager
said there are three aspects that can be changed to reduce costs:
square footage, contingencies, and some building materials. Even so,
it appears that savings would amount to only a few million dollars,
unless the design components are changed in a significant way; e.g.,
certain elements which are not crucial (850-seat auditorium? new
gym?) are eliminated. What are those elements? It's not clear,
because the committee has never prioritized all of the components.
During public comment at the July 1 meeting, someone asked, "What are
the bottom line things that have to be done at Wayland High School
what are the basic things?" The committee did not respond. I
repeated the question and pointed out that myself and others had
asked that question at earlier meetings; I also repeated an earlier
request for an `Option 4,' that would be based on essential needs.
The committee did not respond.
A videotape recording of the July 1 meeting will be broadcast on the
Wayland cable TV channel next Wednesday, July 7, at 7:00 pm. This
broadcast is made possible by volunteer camera operator Richard
Turner, in cooperation with Jim Mullane at WayCam.
A reminder that the public forum will be held the following night,
Thursday, July 8, 7:30pm, High School L1 Lecture Hall (Language
Building). If you cannot attend, you can still give your feedback to
the High School Building Committee by calling the chair, Lea
Anderson, at 508-358-2667.
