With the veg scene being so vibrant and diverse, our President wrote in to TODAY to share his perspectives on how the veg scene has evolved over the decades. The article was published on 02 Jan and sparked a lively debate with many people those who agree as well as those who disagree chiming in with their thoughts. That subsequently led to 2 letters being published on 09 and 10 Jan. You can read these letters as well as follow the accompanying comment threads via the following links:
"It's not our parents' vegetarianism any more" - by Dr George Jacobs
"You're an animal lover? Think again" - letter from Jennifer Lee
"Being vegetarian might not be the healthiest choice" - letter from Stephen Teng

Snake in Yomeishu
One VSS Member, Mr Jeffrey Ng, took the trouble to research on the herbs that are included in the health tonic, Yomeishu, and discovered that it contains one ingredient that was animal-derived.
"Hi, i like to highlight that Yomeishu from Japan is not suitable for vegans and vegetarians. It is not clear in the packaging and only says 'Yomeishu is a herbal health tonic first produced in Japan in 1602 ... principal ingredients used in Yomeishu are fourteen kinds of medicinal herbs'. In this case, it seems to tell consumers it is a plant-based drink.
However, an excerpt on the box reads 'Agkistrodon Japonicae -12mg' which is an animal ingredient as listed on their website
A layman will not know the source of this derivative unless he has done the research, which in this case points to "a genus of venomous pit vipers found in North America from the United States south to northern Costa Rica"
Specifically, agkistrodon refers to the family of snake species comprising Cantil, Copperhead and Cottonmouth. I hope to increase awareness among Singaporeans, especially those who may believe Yomeishu to be a completely herbal drink."
As many of you know, the VSS Student Membership is free and comes packed with a lot of privileges and benefits. But there are so many youths who are not receiving this newsletter and who may not have a chance to stumble upon the VSS website or forum (although many others do). Why not help the cause and share the wonderful news with your fellow students in your own schhol?

A letter to the forum on 15 Dec suggested that sharks were not endangered and that many sharks are actually killed by large-scale fishing methods such as longlines. Jennifer Lee of Project: FIN replied to counter this argument and pointed out that conversation efforts are multi-pronged and address both fishing methods as well as cultural practices. In addition, Edwin Tan illustrated the irony that, while millions of sharks suffer the brutality of having their fins cut off while alive and being thrown back into the water to drown, "If there is just one dog found left on the streets to die after all its four limbs were cut off, the case would spark global anger."

The 'Sai Protein Service Project' is a community service project undertaken by the Ladies' Wing of Sri Sathya Sai Society. Sai Protein is a powder rich in protein that can be dissolved in hot water to prepare a health drink which may be served to anyone - be it children, adults or the aged and elderly.
The Ladies' Wing has undertaken this simple yet fulfilling service project for the transient migrant workers on Serangoon Road from Jan 2011 with due permission for distribution from the NEA. The transient migrant workers, served by the Cuff Road Project run by TWC2, are workers without a job and earnings, primarily due to work-site injury or other reasons.
To prepare, clean ingredients by checking for insects, stones etc. and then dry-roast them in a thickbottomed pan on low flame (except cardamom and sugar). Grind the dry-roasted ingredients together and, separately, the cardamon and sugar before mixing the 2 ground sets together. Mix 45g of the mixture to a cup of hot water for a nutritious drink.
Ingredients for 25kg of Sai Protein:
Wheat (6kg), Boiled Rice (1.5kg), Ragi - i.e. millet (1.5kg), Green Gram - i.e. green chickpeas (1.5kg), Green Moong - i.e. green lentil (1.5kg), Soft Channa Dal - i.e. roasted split chickpeas (1.5kg), Soya (500g), Peanut (500g), Jowar - i.e. great millet/kaffir corn/guinea corn (500g), Sago (100g), Barley (50g), Cardamom (30g), Sugar (10kg)

Ever since NutriHub left Cuppage Plaza for Temple Street, Orchard Road has seemed like a bit of a desert for vegetarians. (The flooding there was not a flood of veg food, unfortunately, although many non-veg places do offer veg options.) Be informed that other veg eateries do exist along Orchard - one such quaint stall is located at the basement of Lucky Plaza. Open from Monday to Saturday, from 6.30am to 6.00pm, it is called Fancy Vegetarian. To learn more about this place, please visit http://www.vegetarian-society.org/node/1138.
The new Healthy Eating Plate created by nutrition experts at Harvard School of Public Health in conjunction with Harvard Health Publications, offers a blueprint for planning a healthy balanced meal and "fixes key flaws in the U.S. Department of Agriculture's MyPlate".
Notably, it advises limiting milk and dairy intake because " high intakes are associated with increased risk of prostate cancer and possibly ovarian cancer" and advocates limiting "red meat - beef, pork, and lamb - and avoid processed meats - bacon, cold cuts, hot dogs, and the like - since over time, regularly eating even small amounts of these foods raises the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and colon cancer".

There are many weight-loss plans centred around the vegan diet but there is little research to conclusively support this rationale. The following article by a dietician discusses the issue from a neutral perspective and suggests planning for a healthier lifestyle rather than being focussed on weight-loss.
