The first Singapore Meatout Week is now a happy part of the history of S’pore vegetarianism. The Organizing Committee carried out six separate events during or before the week, not to mention events by others, such as the Vegetarian & Fruits Jamboree at Bugis Junction. And, that’s also not to mention all the vegetarian outlets that offered promotions during the Week, all the people who pledged to go meatless at least one day during the Week and all the vegetarians who used the Week as an excuse to take a non-veg family member, friend or colleague out to try some veg food – maybe for the first time.
But the Week’s highlight no doubt was the Vega Fiesta on Sun, 31 July at Tampines East CC. An estimated 1000 people packed the CC. All sorts attended, including Mah Bow Tan, Minister for National Development and MP for Tampines GRC, elderly folks from VWO, and preschool kids who came for the drawing, colouring and storytelling, not to mention the frozen desserts and brownies.
It is essential that we convince people to eat less meat. Too many people suffer from diseases linked to meat eating. Too many of our fellow animals suffer as they are raised and slaughtered for meat. Too much environmental damage is caused by the wastefulness of meat eating. Let us continue to work together to help people enjoy food in a true way.

The statistics are horrifying. About 1 billion people are undernourished; millions, the majority of them children, die annually due to hunger and its effects.

- A meat-centred diet requires 10 or more times the land area per person required for a purely veg diet.
- The wealthy nations feed more grain to their livestock than the people of India and China consume directly.
- It has been estimated that if people reduced their animal flesh consumption by just 10%, enough plant food would be released to feed 60 million people.
