NEWS IN BRIEF
GLOWING ORBS WOW WITNESSES IN SOUTHERN AUSTRALIA
Orange glowing orbs are frequently reported cavorting in the skies Down
Under. From Ross Dowe of Australia's National UFO Reporting Center comes
report of a particularly impressive multi-witness sighting that took place
August 14 in the vicinity of Melbourne.
The witnesses included a 47-year old male business executive; a
48-year old business woman; a young man, 17; and a young woman, 18, both
students. Dowe writes that the sighting began around 10:55 pm local time
the observation of one yellowish light, about half the size of a full moon,
traveling from the west at around 20 degrees above the horizon. The
at first thought it was the landing light of an aircraft on approach to a
nearby airport east of their location. It seemed to be at about 500 to 1000
feet altitude. The color of the light seemed too yellow for an aircraft, but
that seemed insignificant at first.
About 5 seconds later, a second light, identical to the first,
appeared from the same location, following at some distance behind the
Approximately 5 seconds behind the second light appeared a third light. Due
to the speed and altitude, the witnesses began to surmise that these lights
were helicopters with dimmed searchlights, flying in formation.
The lights then began to climb and arc towards the northeast at the
same slow consistent speed, keeping a uniform distance between each other,
now at about 45 degrees above the horizon. When they were slightly north of
directly overhead, at perhaps 2000 to 3000 feet, it became obvious that
were not aircraft, as there was no noise from engines or propellers heard.
Their size at this stage was about 1/6 of a full moon.
These lights began to slow their movement, then seemed to "float."
witnesses had a camera and began taking numerous photos. (One photo is
While the lights were floating, they formed into various triangular
formations. The initial formation was a perfect equilateral triangle formed
by the first light remaining motionless while the other two lights
themselves to form the triangle. Over a period of approximately 5 minutes
they continued to float through various triangular formations, including
occasions when one light would suddenly drop to form an elongated triangle,
all the time very slowly drifting towards the northeast while increasing
altitude to possibly 4000 to 5000 feet.
At about 70 degrees above the horizon, they began to slightly
speed toward the northeast, reforming to an Indian-file formation. Soon
after, the lights began to fade. Now about the size of Venus, the leading
light reduced in size and went out, followed soon after by the trailing
light. The middle light flashed off and on three times, bright white, and
The witnesses said there was not any solid appearance to these
objects, but they had a distinct circular shape. Two witnesses noticed that
the rear (third) light might have been four or five small lights close
together. The objects did not cross paths, instead keeping definite
between themselves. The objects "were unquestionably in control or under
control," the witnesses believe.
Ross Dowe further reports that at 9:30 pm the next evening (August
a local talk radio station received calls saying there were 12 yellow/orange
lights traveling in formation over an area 40 kilometers east-northeast of
Melbourne, above the clouds yet visible through the cloud breaks. Making
inquiries on August 16, Dowe learned that there were three reports of these
lights made to the nearby private airport and two similar reports made to
Melbourne International Airport. Dowe says the airport authorities agreed
that something not normal had evidently been observed. They also said that
nothing had been seen on radar.
HUGE TRIANGULAR UFO REPORTED IN SAO PAULO, BRAZIL
The nation of Brazil continues to produce major UFO sightings on an almost
daily basis, as it has for the last several years. From our Brazilian
correspondent Thiago Ticchetti (thiagolt@...
) comes this report
of a huge UFO sighted by several witnesses over the town of Cubatao, Sao
Paulo state, shortly after midnight on August 21. Ticchetti writes:
Around 12:58 am, Mr. Roberto Rabelo arrived at the Water Treatment
Station (ETA) in Cubatao to find three other co-workers watching a huge UFO
in the sky. "I looked to the north and there was a UFO at a low altitude,"
Rabelo said. "One of the ETA operators said that it could be a short-circuit
on a nearby power tower. We ascended the tower and realized that the UFO was
higher. It was not conventional.
"The UFO had a red light on top and 3 other red lights below it in a
triangular shape," said Robelo. "The lights did not blink. Seconds later,
between the red lights, we saw a lot of flashes, hundreds of white flashes.
Then it all disappeared."
Robelo estimated that the UFO "was bigger than a soccer field."
A short time later, the UFO reappeared and behaved as before. Again
they saw many flashing white lights which then appeared to "turn off." But
then, "from the UFO another object, like a yellow ball, came out" and headed
in the direction of a nearby food factory.
Once again the large UFO appeared, outlined by three red lights in
triangle form. This time the men observed what seemed to be a "shadow"
it, tracing a huge triangle.
When last seen, the object was heading east, passing over the food
factory. The sighting lasted 20 minutes.
JAPAN JET PURSUES UNIDENTIFIED CRAFT, DISAPPEARS
The Associated Press reported on August 15 that a jet fighter of the
Defense Agency was sent aloft to intercept an unidentified aircraft spotted
on radar off Japan's southern coast, but was later reported missing. Two
crewmen aboard the F-4EJ Phantom jet were unaccounted for.
The missing plane was one of two sent aloft to pursue the
target. At about 5:15 am local time on August 15, the missing plane lost
radio contact with its partner aircraft. When last seen, the jet was about
miles off Fukue Island, about 680 miles from Tokyo off the coast of Kyushu,
Japan's southernmost main island, the AP said. The plane was still missing
that evening. Visibility was reportedly low and flying conditions were poor,
according to a spokesman for the Defense Agency.
No details were released concerning the possible origin or nature of
the unidentified aircraft that the F-4 jets were pursuing. According to the
Defense Agency, visual contact was never made with the object.
Though the unidentified aircraft was not referred to as a UFO, the
incident bears a striking resemblance to a fatal encounter between a UFO and
a Japanese F-4EJ jet that allegedly occurred on June 9, 1974. As reported by
British ufologist Timothy Good in his book "Above Top Secret" (Quill/Morrow
1988, pg 430f), on that occasion a jet with two crewmen aboard was sent
to intercept an unidentified object seen on radar. Visual contact was made
with a bright glowing saucer-like object. The jet crew armed their weapons,
whereupon the UFO approached at high speed and collided with the jet. Though
both pilots ejected, one was killed. The other, Major Shiro Kubota, resigned
from the service and later divulged details of the encounter.
After a long investigation, Japanese defense officials admitted that
the F-4 jet had been lost following a collision with "an aircraft or object
unknown." No other details of the event had been released at the time Good
published his book.
RESEARCHER'S CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH GOV'T AGENTS
CNI News thanks Peter Davenport, director of the National UFO Reporting
Center (NUFORC, http://nwlink.com/~ufocntr/)
for permission to reprint this
personal account of an unusual meeting with alleged government agents.
I was approached by employees of the U. S. federal government, who
requested a meeting. They first contacted the Hotline on Monday, April 28,
1997. At that time, I was preparing to drive home from Spokane, WA, where I
had made a presentation to the MUFON chapter. I returned their call on the
morning of April 29 and confirmed that they were who they had represented in
their message they were. They requested that we meet sometime soon.
We met on the east coast, beginning at 10:32 am (EDT) on Friday, May
17, 1997, and had what was to have been a one-hour long meeting, but which
went to four hours nonstop.
At the beginning of their meeting, they made their position vis-a-vis
the UFO phenomenon very clear. They represented the following three items in
1) That the UFO phenomenon is undeniably real;
2) That UFOs are what they appear to be, namely sophisticated craft
under some kind of intelligent control;
3) Their "organization" is "worried" about them.
The meeting was to have been dedicated to those reports NUFORC has on
file that place alleged UFOs in proximity to commercial airliners. In fact,
we ended up talking about many subjects. The subject of principal interest
them was TWA 800. They felt that not all of the information about that
accident was getting to the American People.
One question they posed to me that almost "tumbled my gyros" was
whether I had any evidence on file that would suggest to me that there might
be a segment within the U. S. government that was acting in an
extraconstitutional manner, related in any way to the UFO phenomenon.
My answer was "No," although I believe I suggested that there was a
concerted effort on the part of senior members of the government to keep the
minds of Americans off the UFO issue. After some rumination on this
it occurred to me that they might be testing to establish whether I
subscribe, in a "wholesale" fashion, to the government conspiracy issue.
They requested that I not reveal who they are, or what part of the
government they work for, to which I consented. They expressed a strong
preference to not have members of the press knocking on their doors.
They were very cordial... very interesting and stimulating
conversationalists. Not MIB's, supporting my notion that MIB's are probably
HUGH GRANT ASKS ASTRONAUTS ABOUT UFOs ON LENO
Boyish film star Hugh Grant, out pitching his new movie "Mickey Blue Eyes"
the Tonight Show on August 16, turned the show in its ear when he asked an
impertinent question of two other guests, Space Shuttle astronauts Eileen
Collins, commander of STS-93, and mission specialist Dr. Catherine Coleman.
The moment came at the end of the show. Grant, who was not even on
camera at the time, asked Leno if he could pose a question to the two women.
The camera shifted to bring Grant into frame, whereupon he said,"You're both
professional astronauts -- are there UFOs?"
The studio audience tittered, perhaps thinking Grant was making a
joke. But the look on his face suggested he was dead serious and wanted a
real answer. Both astronauts looked at him and smiled, but didn't say a
After a few seconds of pained silence, Grant looked at Leno and said,
"See, they know but they can't talk about it." With that, Leno quickly
brought the show to a close. [CNI News thanks Steve LaMonica for bringing

OVERHEARD: GIANT UFO VIDEOTAPED IN PUERTO RICO?
CNI News thanks Larry Bryant (overtci@...
) for forwarding this
intriguing tidbit from David "Video Dave" Aaron (ufoaaron@...
) of the
Audio Video Clearing House in Yucaipa, California. On August 24, Aaron
"Just received a phone call from one of our members... Giant 2 mile
diameter UFO photographed between Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic by
private party... Watch this site for more news when I have it... Story
circulating now that the Government wants this video and stills... those who
have seen it say it's amazing... I have only the information that I have put
forth in this email to Larry... As more info becomes available, I'll share
with all of you.
"We have heard of photos like this before... so let's not get too
excited... but opening info looks promising. Does anyone else know about
information from Puerto Rico area?"
David Aaron has collected one of the world's largest archives of UFOs
caught on videotape. CNI News will attempt to learn more about this alleged
new video from Puerto Rico.
ASTRONOMERS ASK: WHAT IS THAT MYSTERIOUS LIGHT?
An Associated Press story dated August 17, 1999 tells of a three-year-long
astronomical mystery that still defies explanation.
"It's fairly uncommon to stumble on something you don't have a clue
about," said astronomer S. George Djorgovski of the California Institute of
Technology, a co-discoverer of the mysterious object. He was talking about a
pinpoint of light in the northern sky that doesn't match any known kind of
light ever seen before. Djorgovski and fellow astronomers can't even decide
how far away it is. It may be inside the Milky Way galaxy, or at the very
edge of the visible universe.
Discovered at Caltech's Palomar Observatory, the strange light has
everyone stumped. According to the AP, repeated photographs revealed no
changes in its appearance, which rules out the possibility that it's an
exploding star or supernova. Some astronomers think the object may be a new
class of quasar, a super-energetic object found in the center of galaxies
believed to be powered by matter falling into massive black holes.
"We probably have looked at the spectra of several thousand quasars,
and this just doesn't seem to fit," said David Crampton, an astronomer with
the National Research Council of Canada. Research on the object, which is
located in the constellation Serpens, will continue at the Keck Observatory
in Hawaii. [CNI News thanks Joe Murgia for forwarding this item.]
NANOBOTS TO PLAY LEAD ROLE IN PLANETARY EXPLORATION
An August 22 article by science writer Keay Davidson in the San Francisco
Examiner newspaper reveals that a "cunning robots -- some only several
wide -- soon may swarm, float, walk, swim, fly, creep, burrow and hop across
the alien worlds of the solar system." When these remarkable devices come of
age, they'll make NASA's cute Sojourner Mars robot look positively clunky
Among the new breed of explorers described by Davidson:
-- a four-legged robot the size of a cigar box that will hop around
asteroid like a grasshopper;
-- a snakelike tube that will drill thousands of feet into the
crust, seeking subsurface water and, perhaps, microbes;
-- a two-legged "walking" robot under development at NASA's Ames
Research Center in Mountain View;
-- a hot-air balloon with TV cameras that would bob through the
atmosphere of the giant planet Jupiter;
-- a mini-helicopter able to maneuver through the Martian atmosphere;
-- and a robotic "submarine" that would plunge into an icy ocean of
Jupiter's moon Europa to seek weird life forms in its dark depths.
Because of their characteristic small size, these critters are
collectively dubbed nanobots. Their designs push the limits of imagination
NASA scientists look for novel ways to do much more exploring with much less
money from an increasingly stingy U.S. Congress.
Though tiny, highly customized robot have numerous advantages, one
disadvantage inherent in their size is that fact that the little critters
easily get cold in the frigid reaches of space. Special electronic circuits
and mechanical features will have to be designed to withstand extreme cold
But in the near term, nanobots can go many places humans cannot, at a
tiny fraction of the theoretical cost of manned missions. Very likely their
adventures will make later manned missions safer, cheaper and more
PLUTONIUM POWERED CASSINI PASSES SAFELY BY EARTH
NASA's huge spacecraft Cassini, carrying 72 pounds of deadly plutonium to
power its numerous instruments, made a close but safe pass by the Earth on
August 17 and headed for its eventual rendezvous with the ringed planet
Saturn, having first swung through the inner solar system for a "gravity
assist" from both Venus and Earth to gain speed.
Cassini was launched from Cape Canaveral in October 1997 amidst dire
warnings that a launch failure could result in a disasterous release of
plutonium, among the most toxic substances known. NASA countered that even a
launch failure would be highly unlikely to release any plutonium because the
material is housed inside several layers of protective shielding. When the
launch went as planned, doom-sayers began to predict that Cassini's close
pass by Earth in August 1999 posed yet another unconscionable risk of
disaster. NASA put the odds of an accidental re-entry of Cassini at more
a million to one. On August 17, the spacecraft passed by the Earth as
at a distance of about 728 miles.
In many ways Cassini is an anachronism years before it begins its
mission in 2004. In an era of "smarter, faster, smaller, cheaper" NASA space
missions, Cassini is huge, slow and tremendously expensive -- at $3.4
billion, the most expensive unmanned vehicle ever launched. But now that it
is well on its way, scientists are hopeful that it will prove worthy of the
cost, the risk and the wait. If all goes well, Cassini will deliver its
Huygens parachute-probe into the thick nitrogen atmosphere of Saturn's
enigmatic monster moon Titan, then go on to send back an unprecedented flow
of information about Saturn, its rings and its many other moons during four
years of scheduled exploration.
DID LINDBERGH SEE GHOSTS DURING HIS FAMOUS FLIGHT?
Aviation pioneer Charles Lindbergh had an unnerving close encounter in the
cockpit of the "Spirit of St. Louis" while making his solo transatlantic
flight in 1927, according to biographer A. Scott Berg. On page 124 of Berg's
new book "Lindbergh," he writes:
"It would be almost three decades before Lindbergh would discuss it
publicly, but after almost twenty-four hours of his ordeal -- at around five
o'clock in the morning by his clock -- the fuselage behind him filled with
phantoms -- 'vaguely outlined forms, transparent, moving, riding weightless
with me in the plane.' He later recorded that these ghosts were benign,
vaporous presences. They permeated the fabric walls of the plane, coming and
going at will. With human voices they spoke to him above the noise of the
engine, advising him on his flight and giving him 'messages of importance
unattainable in ordinary life.' They were human in shape but devoid of real
"With years of hindsight, Lindbergh would grant that these visions
would normally have startled him, 'but on this fantastic flight,' he would
recall of the close encounter, 'I'm so far separated from the earthly life I
know that I accept whatever circumstance may come.'"
Was Lindbergh hallucinating? Perhaps -- but he did manage to fly
another nine hours to complete his historic journey. [CNI News thanks Joe
Orsini for sending this item.]
