The budget for the Dept. for International Development (the UK foreign aid agency), which is intended to reduce worldwide poverty, was exempted from the recent budget cuts, because such funds are needed more than ever in times of worldwide fiscal difficulties.
If the situation at Calshot Harbour worsens and there is no usable harbour for fishing or tourists, the entire economy of the island would collapse. Even mail could not get in or out, and people would be reduced to fishing from shore and surviving mostly on potatoes.
The Overseas Territories used to have first call on DFID funding. New Labour suspended that policy. The coalition government has re-instated it. I hope it will be used wisely.
