The less glamorous reality of the otherwise tres chic Out 100 is that
in order to photograph 100 amazing -- and out -- cultural stars of
our community, sometimes logistics get in the way.
>Out would have loved to include actor and now
Barrowman in the 2007 edition -- he appeared on
>Out's October cover last year
just as BBC series Torchwood launched in the US -- but trans-Atlantic
troubles and shooting schedules prevented his inclusion.
So Out was thrilled when the magazine was able to arrange a date that
worked for everyone this time around, and even more excited when the
photos came in.
Inspired by the Rock Hudson/Doris Day classic, Pillow Talk, John
turned his considerable (and consistent) matinee idol clefted chin
and smoldering stare towards our cameras. "Are you getting out of
that bed, or am I coming in after you?" Rock asks in the film, and
we'd like to think in this portrait John could be playing either half
of the exchange.
Call us cinema contemporaries, but we're happy that Rock's
double-life -- captured with deliciously painful irony during these
scenes in Pillow Talk, where his two-timing character pretends to be
gay -- has been updated with John's handsome homo pride.
'Precious and rare all Love is, gender matters not.'
