Breaking news about the 2011 Doctor Who episodes is at http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2010/08_august/29/doctor.shtml
Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has gotten approval from the BBC to split the new 13 episode series into 2 halves. The first half airs in the Spring of 2011 where the 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2010 series aired. The second half airs in fall 2011. According to the press release above, this is to accomodate a mid series plot twist.
The press release does not address how this series of Doctor Who will be handled outside the UK. Thankfully, Doctor Who seems to be doing well on BBC America, SPACE (Canada), ABC Australia, and Prime (New Zealand), so they might go along with this split run and not delay episodes for an extended period of time. I could see this delaying when the 2011 episodes reach countries that air the show dubbed. Time will tell.
