LMC's rule-breaking Festival of Experimental Music brings together the
cream of contemporary experimentalists in a weekend of mind-boggling new
Now in her 60s, Parisian composer Eliane Radigue is one of the key figures
in the development of musique concrete (using tape recordings for
composition) and a unique sculptor of sound. She makes a rare UK appearance
tonight, headlining a bill that also includes American-Japanese performance
artist extraordinaire Miya Masaoka (a koto virtuoso - the koto is the
Japanese gagaku zither - whose recent works have involved 3,000 live bees
and ten naked Asian men); Brixton's "breakbeat ninja" Apache 61, a true
original in a world of derivative electronica; and Romania's foremost
postmodern composer, the pianist Ana-Maria Avram, in a transcendental and
noisy duo with percussionist Luminita Fara.

"An often perverse delight" (The Guardian), LMCcontinues to break new
ground and defy expectations in its presentations of new music.
Ikue Mori is one of the pioneers of modern electronic music. A founder
member (with Arto Lindsay) of New York "No Wave" group DNA, her use of
electronic percussion is without precedent or parallel. Tonight she engages
in a battle of wits with Swiss virtuoso pianist Sylvie Courvoisier.
Quebec's sampler-composer Diane Labrosse presents a new work which
deconstructs well-known proverbs and melodic conundrums with a group of
London's finest performers - and the Devonshire avant-diva Sarah Frances.
Susan Alcorn is a pupil of Pauline Oliveros - her radical "deep listening"
approach to the steel guitar, the quintessential country and western
instrument, is a revelation. People Like Us is the nom de guerre of Vicki
Bennet, a collaborator of Negativland and a genius in her own right when it
comes to "plunderphonics" - Vicki steals and tenderly destroys other
people's music to make her own amazing sounds.

"An obstinate clot of innovation among the rest of British music festivals"
(The Wire), LMC's Festival of Experimental Music is in its tenth year - and
the organisation itself is celebrating 25 years of continuous activity.
Marilyn Crispell is one of the most highly regarded pianists at the sharp
end of jazz - her work is both monumental and lyrical, picking up where
Cecil Taylor leaves off. The European quartet of Charlotte Hug (viola),
Caroline Kraabel (saxophone), Annette Krebs (guitar) and Andrea Neumann
(destroyed piano insides) play spacious acoustic improvisations which draw
in elements of noise and use the concert hall as their sounding board -
literally bouncing ideas off the wall. Blectum From Blechdom, by way of
complete contrast, play a blend of madcap West coast electronic whimsy,
injected with Residents-style subversion; and London's Gail Brand, a key
figure in the city's thriving free-improv scene, turns the trombone into an
instrument of eloquence and wit.
