For the record, I consider Scientology to be a valid Thelemic
offshoot. The similarities between the "OT Levels" and the Golden
Dawn/A*A* grades are quite telling. I've always thought that
Dianetics was Ron's "Exempt Adept" papers, after a fashion.
My exposure to Scientology has never been in the orthodox ScN vein,
like Magick in general, I have chosen a path of experimentation
rather than attempting to get close to a group situation that has
anything but liberation in mind for its members. This attitude got me
out of cOTO, and has in general proofed me against cultish thinking
The Free Zone itself was born in the early 80's from the efforts of
former church members such as David Mayo, Pat and Annie Broker and
other people who schismed from the orthodox church after Ron's death
To elaborate on your query: 'Free Zone Scientology' is defined as the
practice of Scientology (and Dianetics), outside of the orthodox
church. Unfortunately, the Church of ScN has an edict that "Ron is
the only source", meaning, that Ron is the only source of the
technology delivered in Scientology, and it cannot be changed or
altered or subject to experimentation. Many in the Free Zone also
adhere to this belief, many do not. In light of this view,
many 'evolved offshoots' of ScN have popped up, and the venacular of
ScN has become incorporated into many other counseling and therapy
The truth is, Ron was never the only source, Ron's first sources were
Jack Parsons and Crowley and their peers in Pasadena, after that Ron
worked with a dozen or so other men who were various experts in
psychology, behavioral analysis, electronic engineering, and
biofeedback analysis. My friend , Mike Goldstein out of Denver, ran
the ScN org of Denver for 20 years with John Galusha, who was Ron's
(auditor), and is responsible for authoring at least as much tech as
Ron, if not more.
All I can say is, that Scientology processes have worked really well
for me, getting at lifelong problems which had never responded to
conventional therapy and resolving them in minutes, for good. In
fact, I consider that ScN processes in many instances make
conventional psychotherapy look like medeival barbering, conversely,
I have seen the same tech applied in things like Transactional
Analysis and Primal Scream, however I woudl reccomend that
practitioners of those systems should learn to use an e-meter. It
takes a lot of the guesswork away.
In closing, I would say I highly reccomend everyone get some
auditing, but dont join the church to do it.
Also I consider that if someone was close to cOTO, they ought to
observe this anecdotal review as a parable.
As to my exposure to Thelema, I joined the cOTO in 1987. I was active
for about a five year period until late 1993 when I was exposed to an
order called the Q*B*L*H*, a Thelemic order whose members first
revealed New Aeon English Qaballah to me, (colloquially reffered to
as 'Cipher 6' or ALW). I broke active contact with the order after
being made a Bishop after the OHO instituted degree requirements for
these offices, an edict I find ridiculous and licentious. I continued
my work with QBLH for a period of about 7 years, studying under the
OHO of that order: one William W. Webb, aka 'Frater Damon'. My
principal brother in this order is one Joel Love (aka 'Frater Non-
Sequitur' & 'Frater 496'). Joel was an active ScN member for over a
decade, and is a well trained auditor. Most of my meter time and
study of ScN has been via his tutelage.
From 1994 to the present time, Joel has been the vehicle of a great
deal of high-caliber Qabbalistic lore relating to the ALW cipher
which has unveiled a peculiar understanding of the Holy Books and of
Thelema in general. Rather than attempt to impress this exegesis upon
any other order, it seemed reasonable to found our own Thelemic Order
to serve as an ecclesiatical org for this data.
Our order is the N*O*T* (New Order of Thelema) it is in fact a 'non-
org' which I am not the head, yet I am its founder. This org has no
heirarchy, no initiation rites, dues, or oaths of fealty either to
itself or to its members. We take the original motto of the AA to the
extreme, applying deconstructive scrutiny even the the degree system
itself. We do however, do adhere to a 'quasi-orthodoxy' regarding
certain applications of Planetary Magick, Sex Magick, and the NAEQ.
Any of our materials are free for the asking, we do not enforce any
sort of orthodoxy upon our members.
More about the N*O*T* and our thelemaspin can be perused at our
